COOPER, Elizabeth Dall, 88, of Carolina Village, Hendersonville, N.C., died Saturday, October 19, 1996, at Carolina Village Health Care Center. A native of Washington, D.C., she had lived in Roanoke, Va., before moving to Hendersonville 15 years ago. She was the wife of the late Col. Eugene Gordon Cooper, who died in 1987. She was a member o f First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, and a former member of Grandin Court Baptist Church in Roanoke. Survivors include her son, Robert L. Cooper of Arlington, Va.; a brother, Vernon Bateman of Hendersonville, and two granddaughters, Mary Nelle Cooper of Dallas, Texas, and Christiana Bess Cooper of Albuquerque, N.M. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Roanoke. Arrangements are by Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors, Hendersonville.
COOPER, Kathryn Sink, 83, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, October 19, 1996. She was a member of Pecks Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie B. Cooper, two sisters, three brothers, and one great-grandchild. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Winford Simmons of Bedford, Joyce Cooper of Roanoke; sons and daughters-in-law, Silas and Jane Cooper of Marietta, Ga., William B., Jr. and Sue Cooper of Blue Ridge, David and Wanda Cooper of Bedford; a sister, Dora Stump of Roanoke; brothers-in-law, Sterl Cooper, Chamblissburg, Charlie Cooper of Ohio; sisters-in-law, Lizzie Gibson of Roanoke, Esther Sink of Newport News. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Tuesday, October 22, 1996, at Lotz Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Sherrill officiating. Interment will follow in Martin Family Cemetery. CRAGHEAD, Helen Franklin, 89, of Covington, died Sunday, October 20, 1996 at her residence. She was born July 26, 1907 in Bedford County, daughter of the late Wren Lee and Otie Jane Franklin. She is survived by two sons, Bobby L. Craghead of Covington, Kenneth S. Craghead and daughter-in-law, Stephanna L. Craghead of Roanoke; a daughter-in-law, Doris C. Craghead of Florence, KY; one sister, Jane Franklin of Roanoke; two brothers, Welford Franklin and Rice Franklin, both of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Michael L. Craghead, K. Steven Craghead and wife Theresa, Jerold W. Craghead and wife Aldena, all of Covington, Judy C. Whitson of Roanoke, Joan C. Foster and husband Kip of HArdy, Alan L. Craghead and wife Rebecca of Falmouth, Susan C. Malette and husband John of Greenville, NH, Dana L. Craghead and wife Sandy of Burlington, KY; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Brethren Church, with the Rev. Dan Gillette officiating. Interment will be in Alleghany Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Arritt Funeral Home and other times at the residence, 542 E. Dolly Ann Drive.

JOHNSON, Nora Thelma, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, October 20, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd H. Johnson; a son, Carli Johnson, and daughters, Cleo Shaffer, Lola Greer and Anna Lee Mays. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Clarence Marshall; sons and daughters-in-law, Floyd H. Johnson, Charles and Jean Johnson, Robert and Shirley Johnson, and Smith and Geraldine Johnson; a daughter-in-law, Lois Johnson; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 22, 1996, in Russell Memorial Park in Russell County, with the Rev. Austin Fields officiating. KEISTER, Gladys E., 88, of Salem, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 19, 1996. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She was a life-time member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for 48 years. She was retired from the City of Salem as a PBX operator. She had performed volunteer services for the American National Red Cross and other organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband, Almer E. Keister. Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Tilford E. and Sylvia R. Keister of Roanoke; a sister, Doris Reynolds of Salem; sister-in-law, Jessie Moore of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Patrick E. Keister, Roanoke, Melissa D. and Dennis Hardy of Salem, Dallas J. and Theresa Keister of Roanoke, Austin D. Keister of Roanoke; great-grandchildren, Stephanie Hardy, Crystal Keister and Haley Keister. Also surviving are many loving friends. Funeral services will be conducted 12 noon Tuesday, October 22, 1996, at Lotz Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Chapman officating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. LaFON, Fred William, 79, of Newport, died Saturday evening, October 19, 1996 in Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Born in Giles County on March 21, 1917, he was a son of the late James William (Will) and Stella Thomas LaFon. He attended the First Christian Church of Newport and was a member of the Clover Hollow Christian Church and a retired employee of the Hoechst-Celanese Plant, with 38 years service. Surviving are his wife, LaVerne Turpin LaFon; one son, Fred Larry LaFon of Newport; four grandchildren, B. J. LaFon, Blacksburg, Timmy LaFon of Christiansburg, Cindy Bradberry of Bastian and Christi Montgomery of Kernersville, N.C.; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold LaFon of Rich Creek and Ira LaFon of Pearisburg; one sister, Mamie Thorpe of Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. Roger Henderson, the Rev. Jack Waldron and the Rev. Jim Belcher officiating. TAYLOR, Melvin Otherine, Sr., 67, of Huddleston, passed away on Saturday, October 19, 1996, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Quincy, W.Va., on December 10, 1928, a son of the late Theodore Taylor and Eula Fohren Taylor, who survives. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Patricia Taylor. He was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, the Thomas C. Cecil #375 Masonic Lodge in Kentucky, the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple in Charleston, W.Va., and was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Irma Howery Taylor of Huddleston; three sons, Melvin O. Taylor II of Diamond, W.Va., and Larry M. Taylor and Mark A. Taylor of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; a daughter, Marilyn T. Cunningham of Cross Lanes, W.Va.; a brother, Owen G. Taylor of St. Albans, W.Va.; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 22, 1996, at 2 p.m., from Updike Funeral Chapel, Huddleston, by the Rev. Tim Dooley and the Rev. THOMPSON, Hattie Ferguson, 88, of Roanoke, died in Richmond on Saturday, October 19, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Grover A. Thompson. She was the daughter of James W. and Ollie Shaver Ferguson. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and John Trotti of Richmond, and a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Linda Thompson of Cary, N.C.; also, grandchildren, Beth Schneir, Greg Thompson, Gwen Thompson, Meg Richardson and Michael Trotti, and great-grandchildren, Jessica and Ashley Smith, Danielle Thompson, Leighann Thompson, Ian Richardson, Colton Richardson, Sophie Trotti Lux and Mark Thompson. She is also survived by brothers, Guy L. Ferguson and Roy W. Ferguson of Roanoke; a sister, Mildred Ferguson of Vinton, and many nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Confederacy.
