Sometimes the bear gets you
Maybe the bear that took a couple of bites out of Charles Crummett of Millboro didn't know the rules.
The mauling took place late in the bear hound training season, a period when sportsmen are allowed to chase bear with their hounds but not kill or otherwise harm them. It is illegal to carry a gun, bow or other weapon during the season.
But a bear near Hot Springs took the training seriously.,
According to a report in The Recorder, a newspaper that covers Bath and Highland counties, Crummett was deep in the woods when a medium-sized bear attacked one of his dogs. When Crummett entered the fray to protect his hound, the bear bit him on the lower portion of both legs.
A report from the Bath County Community Hospital said Crummett walked eight to 10 miles out of the woods after the attack.
The bear, apparently, went the other direction.
Health and wildlife officials say attacks by black bear are extremely rare.
Virus kills deer
Dead deer have been showing up in Virginia and West Virginia, the victims of a fatal virus.
More than 20 deer have been found dead on the 50,000-acre Quantico Marine Base in Virginia. Officials believe the deaths are caused by epizootic hermorrhagic disease (EHD).
The disease is not uncommon in Virginia, said Matt Knox, deer research biologist for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Cold weather is expected to stop its spread, which is caused by insect bites.
License to kill
A new hunting license gives hunters 15 and younger a break by combining a small-game, big-game, archery and muzzleloading license into a single unit that sells for $15.50. It is called a Junior Combination Hunting License.
In the past, it would have cost a youngster $30 for all four licenses. Young hunters who don't need a bow or muzzleloading license can purchase a junior hunting and big-game combination license for $7.50
