BROTT'S BIRDIE BINGE YIELDS SENIOR TITLE

John Brott birdied four of five holes in a stretch on the back nine to win the eighth PGA Senior Club Professional Championship at the Ibis Golf & Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on Sunday.

Brott, from Talladega, Ala., fired a 72-hole 279 total to complete a four-stroke victory over two-time champion Tom Joyce.

Roanoke's Billy King fired a 73 for a 294 total, good for 31st place and $1,450.

Brott earned $14,000 for the victory, which included birdie putts on the 12th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th holes.

The low 55 scorers qualified for berths in the 58th PGA Seniors Championship on April 17-20, 1997.

In other news in the region:

* The Carolinas team retained possession of the Captain's Putter Trophy by playing to a 108-108 tie in the Virginias-Carolinas matches at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach.

This is the first tie in the competition that began in 1955. The Carolinas lead the competition 38-12-1.

* Virginia Tech's Curtis Deal fired a 36-hole total of 150 to lead the Hokies at the Duke Golf Classic in Durham, N.C. (Scores in Scoreboard. B5)

Deal shot a 76 and a 74 over the 7,045-yard, par-72 course during the tournament's first day and is in 20th place.

Virginia Commonwealth's John Rollins fired a 72-70-142 to lead the field by one stroke and pace his team to an eight-stroke lead over N.C. State. The 15-team field plays the 18-hole final round today.

* Junior Ed Alvarez and freshman Will Lovelace led Ferrum to the team title at the Averett Golf Invitational in Yanceyville, N.C.

Alvarez fired a 76 and a 73 for a two-round total of 149 on the par-72 Caswell Pines Golf Course and Lovelace shot 74-86-160 to take first and third place, respectively. Ferrum won the tournament at 629, 34 strokes better than Virginia Wesleyan.(Scores in Scoreboard. B5)

* Matt Leonard scored two overtime goals to lead Virginia (12-0-3 overall, 3-0-2 ACC) past Clemson (7-5-2, 1-2-1) 3-2 in a men's soccer game in Clemson, S.C.

* Matt Whalen scored two goals as Virginia Tech (9-6, 5-3 Atlantic 10) extended its win streak to four games with a 5-1 victory over Xavier (5-9, 2-6) in a men's soccer game at Tech Park.

* Todd Hallauer, Jamin Hujik and Walter Robinson scored as Roanoke (7-3-2) shut out Concordia (Minn.) College 3-0 in a men's soccer game in Salem to extend its win streak to six games.

* Alfred (10-3-1) outshot Ferrum 32-2 to earn a 3-0 victory in women's soccer in Ferrum. The Panthers are 5-4-3.

* In singles competition at the eight-team Washington and Lee Invitational women's tennis tournament, George Mason's Ann Mange defeated Radford's Safaa Najdi 6-4, 6-4. In doubles Mange and Bobbie Lee beat the Highlanders' Najdi and Heskia Dil 8-3 in a pro set.

* Oliver Mayo, Virginia Tech's All-America senior, advanced to the consolation final of the 1996-97 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Collegiate Grand Slam only to lose to Fresno State's Fredrik Giers 6-4, 6-1.

* Bill Poulson won the Pro/Expert division of the 10th Great Escape mountain bike race in Craig County, completing the 26-mile course in 2 hours, 16 minutes. Robbie Robinson took first in the Veteran 35-plus division with a time of 3:02, while Amanda Bailey won the Beginner Women's race in 1:25 and Mike Hollis captured the Beginner Men's race in 1:18.
