MILESTONE WIN FOR STAUNTON RIVER

Jarrett Ferguson rushed for three touchdowns, including the game-winner, as Staunton River set a school record for victories in a season by beating Heritage 27-21 in a Seminole District matchup Saturday night in Lynchburg.

Staunton River (7-1 overall, 3-1 district) trailed 21-6 in the second quarter, but Jeremy Wright scored on a 7-yard run with three minutes remaining before halftime.

Danny Thomas connected with Ferguson on a 29-yard touchdown pass for the first of two Staunton River scores in the third quarter. Thomas completed four of six passes for 125 yards.

Kevin Martin led the Eagles with 82 yards rushing on 21 carries. Ferguson finished with eight carries for 33 yards, and Wright collected 42 yards on six carries.

Halifax County 39, Franklin County 27: The Comets parlayed a 22-point halftime lead into a non-district victory over the Eagles in South Boston, where athletic director Jerry Little guided Franklin County as interim coach.

Halifax County (4-2) began the game with an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Shannon Jennings and cruised from there.

The Eagles got two field goals from Matt Maxey, a touchdown run of 7 yards from Brandon Smith and a 17-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Basham to Jacob Gibson.
