FALL LEAF PICKUP PROGRAMS GETTING UNDER WAY

Leaf collection begins this week in Blacksburg and next week in Christiansburg, and will continue in phases in different parts of the towns into December. Radford's two-phase leaf pickup is under way and is scheduled to end in December.

Following is a rundown of dates and places in the two largest New River Valley towns and its one city:

Blacksburg

Blacksburg's leaf collection is for town refuse customers only and will have three phases. Early leaf collection will occur in a two-part first phase between Friday and Nov. 1. The second phase will be regular collection, during four weeks in November and early December, with one week assigned to each of Blacksburg's four quadrants (see accompanying map). During the third phase, which does not have a scheduled ending date, Blacksburg will collect leaves in any part of the town where they have continued to fall.

The schedule is:

* Friday to Oct. 29, early collection in heavily forested areas east of Main Street.

* Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, early collection in heavily forested areas west of Main Street.

* Nov. 4 to 8, regular collection in the southwest quadrant.

* Nov. 12 to 18, regular collection in the southeast quadrant.

* Nov. 19 to 25, regular collection in the northeast quadrant.

* Nov. 26 to Dec. 4, regular collection in the northwest quadrant.

* Dec. 5 to completion: repeat collection in any area of the town where leaves have continued to fall.

The town's southwest quadrant is the area bordered by South Main Street and Prices Fork Road. The southeast quadrant is between South Main Street and Roanoke Street/Harding Avenue. The northeast quadrant is defined by North Main Street and Roanoke Street/Harding Avenue. The northwest quadrant is between North Main Street and Prices Fork Road. All quadrants extend to the town limits.

Residents should place leaves on curbs by the first day of the collection period for their quadrant. Leaves may be piled or in bags. (The town recommends that piled leaves be covered with a sheet or tarp and weighted with stones or bricks, to prevent blowing.) Bagged leaves will be collected within two days of notice to the town, regardless of the collection schedule.

The town will deliver leaves free to all residents, farmers and other locations in Blacksburg or within five miles of the town, to be used as a soil additive or compost. Blacksburg is offering the service to prevent leaves from being deposited in the landfill, which can be expensive and wasteful of limited landfill space. Call the town's general properties superintendent at 961-1145 for information or to arrange for delivery of leaves, either in bags or loose.

Christiansburg

Leaf collection will occur twice in each quadrant of Christiansburg between Monday and Dec. 20.

The schedule is:

* Monday to Nov. 1, and Nov. 25 to 29, southeast quadrant.

* Nov. 4 to 8, and Dec. 2 to 6, northeast quadrant.

* Nov. 11 to 15, and Dec. 9 to 13, northwest quadrant.

* Nov. 18 to 22, and Dec. 16 to 20, southwest quadrant.

The town asks residents to pile or bag leaves and place them at curbs during their pickup week and to not block storm drains with leaves or bags.

The southeast quadrant is between South Franklin Street and Roanoke Street. The northeast quadrant is between Roanoke Street and North Franklin Street. The northwest quadrant is bordered by North Franklin Street and West Main Street. The southwest quadrant is defined by West Main Street and South Franklin Street. All quadrants extend to the town limits.

Leaf collection will occur again in the town in March and continue through the spring cleanup weeks, which will be set at a later date. For more information on Christiansburg's leaf collection, call 382-6128.

Radford

Radford's two-phase leaf pickup began last week in Section A, an area around Radford University bounded by Connellys Run on the west, Hammett-Madison Avenues on the south, Howe and Calhoun streets and the east and north to Norwood Street at the eastern city limits.

The remaining schedule for the first phase is:

* Section B. Through Friday, the area bordered by Staples Street, from First Street and Rock Road to the New River, including Sunset Park, Forest Park and Inglewood.

* Section C. Monday to Nov. 1, the area bordered by Park Road and Hillcrest Avenue/Valley View Street south to Rock Road, including Haven Heights, College Park and Auburn Avenue.

* Section D. Nov. 4 to 8, the area bounded by Staples Street to Connellys Run, from First Street through Fifth Street.

* Section E. Nov. 11 to 22, the area between Staples Street and Connellys Run/Park Road from Sixth Street through 12th Street/Sundell Drive.

* Section F. Nov. 25 to Nov. 29, the area between Staples Street and Park Road from Sundell Drive south to the city limits, including Radford Village, Woodlawn, Ridgefield, Simpkins Village and Cumberlea.

The second phase is Dec. 2 to 6, during which the city will collect in heavily wooded areas where leaves have continued to fall.

Residents should pile leaves at their street property line and cover them with sheets or tarps weighted with stones or bricks. Residents should not block drainage ditches, pipes or gutters.

Leaves that are bagged in any area of the city can be scheduled for pickup within three days by calling the public works department at 731-3607.

Leaves should be free of rock, sticks or other debris that can damage the vacuum equipment. No leaves will be collected from private property or alleys.

Residents can schedule free leaf delivery by calling the public works department.
