4 HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE

The Montgomery County public schools recently announced students who were recognized as Seniors-of-the-Month for September and October. These students are recognized for their academic and extracurricular activities and accomplishments at school and within the community. One senior is selected from each of the four high schools in the county.

The following seniors were recognized for September. The October honorees will be listed next week in Class Notes.

SEPTEMBER

* Amber Tannenbaum is a student at Auburn High School where she is a member of the Community Education and Prevention Services Board, the College Club and the Student Council Association. She also is a four-year member of the Future Homemakers of America, having served as president, vice president, treasurer and reporter. Tannenbaum's other leadership positions include: vice president of the senior class and president of the Student Ruritan Club, an organization that she helped establish at the high school.

Tannenbaum also has is a member of the Mountain Academic Competition Conference English team, which she has lettered in for three years, and the All Around MACC team. She's been nominated for Who's Who Among High School Students and the National Science Scholarship Award. She has been a Girls State representative and recipient of a summer Youth Institute Scholarship. In addition, she tutors students in algebra and volunteers at the Montgomery County Christmas Store.

She is the daughter of Nathan and Sherry Tannenbaum of Pilot.

* Second-year drum major Nicole Fitzwater is a four-year member of the Blacksburg High School marching band. She also has been band captain and plays the percussion on the Symphonic Band.

Fitzwater is president of the Student Council Association. She is a member of the Youth and Government Club and has participated in Model General Assembly (House of Representatives). She also president of the Latin Club this year.

Fitzwater also is involved with athletics at school. She is captain of the tennis team and has been a cheerleader for boys basketball. She has attended Girls State and is a member of the Blacksburg Methodist Youth Group and the church's choir. She is the daughter of Norman and Joyce Fitzwater of Blacksburg.

* Sarah Waters is president of the senior class at Christiansburg High School. She also is a member of the graduation committee and homecoming court representative. Waters is a four-year member of Young Life, Teens Need Teens, Youth and Government Club and Youth America Campus Club. She is serving her second term as president of the Distributive Education Clubs of America. She also is the state western area vice president for the organization.

In addition, Waters has had perfect school attendance for three years. She also is active at St. Paul Methodist Church and works as a student intern at Richardson-Horne Funeral Home. She is the daughter of Danny and Nancy Waters of Christiansburg.

* Staci Harless has been recognized academically since her freshman year at Shawsville High School. Harless received straight A's during her first three years and had the highest grade-point average in biology and English as a sophomore. She has been a Who's Who Among American High School Students for three years and an All American Scholar for two years.

As a junior, she received the Blacksburg/Christiansburg Rotary Academic Achievement Award, the Academic Bar and the Xerox Scholar Award. She also attended the Gardner Webb University Presidential Scholars Program and the American Auxiliary Virginia Girls State.

Harless is an active member of the marching band, concert band and color guard. She also participates in the College Club, Spanish Club and Beta Club. She is a four-year member of the basketball team, volleyball team and tennis team, serving as co-captain her junior year. She is the daughter of Allen and Debbie Harless of Shawsville.

It's homecoming weekend at Radford High School Saturday from 7 to 10 a.m. The pancake festival is sponsored by the Radford Choral Patrons Association and will be in the school's cafeteria. The menu includes pancakes, sausage, milk, juice and coffee. Magician Jeremy Greystoke will be at the event. Pure Vermont maple syrup will be raffled from ticket receipts.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door. Proceeds will benefit the music department's planned trip to Florida. For more information, call Lois Castonguay at 639-0430.

There will be a Parent Resource Center Workshop Oct. 29 at Belle Heth Elementary School in Radford. The workshop, titled "Problem Solving and Conferencing Strategies for Parents," will focus on how parents can be more effective at helping solve problems such as class rules and homework that may arise between the student and the teacher.

The program is sponsored by the Radford Parent Resource. Free child care and refreshments will be provided. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to call 731-3679 for reservations.

There will be a Halloween carnival at Bethel Elementary School Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. The program is sponsored by the PTA. Tickets will be sold for booths at 25 cents each or a book of 25 for $5. The haunted house is $1. Concessions will be sold.
