Japan, Kenya, Sweden, Costa Rica and Portugal won two-year seats on the Security Council in voting Monday to fill five nonpermanent slots.
The only surprise was Australia's failure to win a seat. Its foreign minister personally lobbied at the United Nations last month.
Membership on the 15-member council gives countries the opportunity to shape and influence international policies along with the five permanent members: the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France.
The five new members assume their seats Jan.1.
