A dump truck knocked down a utility pole in Northeast Roanoke County on Monday afternoon, disrupting power to about 1,200 customers, including Hollins College and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. of Roanoke.
"Today was a midsemester reading day, so the students didn't have classes," said Linda Steele, spokeswoman for Hollins College. "It was a good day for it to happen."
The truck hit the pole as it was grading the road at U.S. 11 and Shadwell Drive, said Terry McMahan, Roanoke district manager of American Electric Power Co.
The outage extended from the intersection of U.S. 11 and Plantation Road to the Troutville area. Power was restored to most customers within 90 minutes, McMahan said.
