TIMESLAND GOLFERS 4TH IN GROUP AAA

Franklin County finished fourth in the team competition and Patrick Henry's Lee Taylor was fourth in the individual standings at the Group AAA golf tournament Tuesday in Richmond.

Mills Godwin of Richmond won the team title with a 619 total for two days on the par-72 Hermitage Country Club course, beating runner-up C.D. Hylton of Woodbridge by 11 strokes. Franklin County lost a one-hole playoff with Centreville for third place after the teams finished tied at 652.

Hylton's Matt Krauss won the individual crown in a one-hole playoff with Kevin Miller of Salem-Virginia Beach after they tied at 3-over-par 147. Taylor finished three strokes off the pace. (Scores in Scoreboard. B2)

In other golf in the region:

* Rockbridge County's Eric Reynolds placed fourth at the Group AA championship in Appomattox, six strokes off the pace of champion Mike Gooden (R.E. Lee-Staunton). Northside's Jason Orlando finished sixth, Neil Norris (Fieldale-Collinsville) and George Pickral (Rockbridge) tied for seventh in the individual competition.

Harrisonburg won the team title with a two-day total score of 619. Northside finished third with a 643 and Rockbridge placed fifth with a 646. (Scores in Scoreboard. B2)

* Eric Hooke of Highland finished second, four strokes off the pace, at the Group A championship in Big Stone Gap.

Troy Copenhaver of team champion Stonewall Jackson-Mount Jackson won the individual title with a 2-over-par 144 total on the Lonesome Pine Country Club course. Brian Love of George Wythe was fourth, at 155.

Stonewall Jackson's 633 total was good enough to claim the team crown, with Powell Valley (656) second. Wythe finished with a 659 total and Glenvar (686) was fifth. (Scores in Scoreboard. B2)

* Hanging Rock pro Chip Sullivan and partner Steve Madsen finished one shot back to tie for second at the Middle Atlantic PGA Two-Man Team Championship in Stafford. Rick Schuller and Mark Evenson finished at 21-under-par 193 for 54 holes to win their third title.

SOCCER Tech women overpower High Point

Shannon Otto scored three goals and Katie Irish added two as the Virginia Tech women routed High Point 6-1 in a non-conference game in Blacksburg. The Hokies (8-7-1) scored five goals in the first 23 minutes.

* Radford's women secured a 2-0 non-conference victory over Howard in Washington.

Karen Dellaria scored the deciding goal in the 35th minute for the Highlanders. Jill MacFarlane tacked on the second goal in the match's 55th minute. Keeper Holly Patterson registered the shutout with 11 saves for Radford (5-9-1).

* VMI built a three-goal halftime lead and cruised to a 4-2 victory over St.Francis, Pa., in a men's game in Loretto, Pa.

Michael Maire, Rich Daughtridge, Paul DeRose and Mike Polhamus scored the goals for the Keydets (5-10). Matt Bryant of Roanoke had an assist. Alex Cormas scored both goals for the Red Flash (3-12).
