ARNOLD, Rev. Frederick Odell, (``Fred''), 70, of Max Meadows, died Tuesday, October 22, 1996. Funeral Thursday, 3 p.m., at the Barnett Funeral Chapel in Wytheville. Visitation Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

BURKS, Catherine Harwell, 90, of Bedford, died Monday, October 21, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Sh e was born in Osceola, Ark. on August 12, 1906, a daughter of the late Carl Mallory Harwell and Lucy Pulliam Rhodes Harwell. She was the widow of Philip Parks Burks Sr. She was a former music teacher, taught piano in Bedford for many years, and was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Philip Parks Burks Jr., Chesterfield, and John Mallory Burks, M.D., Williamsport, Pa.; five grandchildren, David Harwell Burks, Kristin Watts Burks, Mallory Glezen Burks, Elizabeth St. John Burks, and Catherine-Marie Harwell Burks. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 24, 1996, at 10 a.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. D. Glen Langston officiating. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Main Street United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.

BURNETTE, Harry Roy, Sr., 64, of Galax, passed aw ay Monday, October 21, 1996, in Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He was born June 23, 1932 in Carroll County. Mr. Burnette was a member of Gospel Chapel Church. He was retired from Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Company, Galax, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was the world's greatest spoon player. He is survived by his wife, Martha June Burnette; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Darlene and Bill Poovey, Newton, N.C.; sons and daughters-in-law, James Darrell and Susan Burnette, Mt. Airy, N.C., Charles (Dickie) and Elizabeth Burnette, Galax, Yancy Dale Burnette, Galax, Harry Roy Jr. (Cookie) and Michelle Burnette, Galax; brothers, Edward L. Burnette, Bluefield, W.Va., Harold Burnette, Galax, Donald Burnette, Hillsville; sisters, Peggy Bowen, Martinsville, Phyllis Taylor, Pfafftown, N.C.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, 1996, at Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel with Rev. Robert Davis officiating. Interment will be in Parnell Cemetery. BUTLER, Jaime Wynn, 19, of Route 3, Wytheville, died Monday, October 21, 1996, in the Wythe County Community Hospital from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident. She graduated from Fort Chiswell High School and was a student at Wytheville Community College, and was employed as a swing manager at McDonalds in Fort Chiswell. She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Brenda and John King of Route 3, Wytheville; father and stepmother, Jonny and Carol Butler of Radford; a daughter, Larista Tyler Walke; fiance, Clayton Walke of Route 3, Wytheville; brother, Kevin Butler of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; four stepsisters, Ann Sisson of Rocky Gap, Meg King of Wytheville, Denise Ratliffe of Rocky Gap, Donna Stinchcomb of Radford; three stepbrothers, John King of Route 3, Wytheville, Brian Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., Darin Smith of Virginia Beach; maternal grandparents, Brown and Hazel Bratton of Radford. Several aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 24, 1996, at 11 a.m. at the Bakers Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Earl Hanks officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. The body will be taken to the Bakers Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. CARUCCI, Helen Toth, 76, of Blacksburg, died Sunday, October 20, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. ELLER, J. E., 74, of Marion, died Monday, October 21, 1996, in the VA Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn. He is survived by one son, John Eller of Mechanicsville; one sister, Libby Landis of Chilhowie; three grandchildren, John Ryan Eller, Melissa Purvis, and Jenna Eller. FLINT, Elizabeth Shires, 68, of Buchanan, died Monday, October 21, 1996. GRUBB, Stephen Emory, 56, of Christiansburg, died Monday, October 21, 1996, in North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. He was a retired employee of the Virginia Department of Highways. Surviving are his wife, Loretta Stewart Grubb; one daughter, Teresa Grace Grubb; his mother, Esther W. Grubb; one sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Kelley Nunley, all of Christiansburg. LAYMAN, William D., 94, of Roanoke, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away at his home, Monday, October 21, 1996, with his family at his side. Mr. Layman and his deceased brother, Rev. R. B. Layman, founded Layman Candy Company in 1945. Mr. Layman was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Weda S. Layman; daughter, Juanita L. Neely; granddaughters and husbands, Judy N. and Micky Ross, Janet N. and Harry Surratt Jr., Jeri N. and Kenneth Keen; seven great-grandchildren, Scott Thomasson, Justin, Jordan, and Hollyn Keen, Harrison, Elizabeth and Sarah Surratt. PETERS, Barry Lynn, 43, of Pearisburg, passed away on Monday, October 21, 1996. Mr. Peters was born in Pearisburg on May 17, 1953, and was a son of Marshall (``Pete"") and Doris Cannoy Peters. Mr. Peters was preceded in death by his brother, Randy Peters. Mr. Peters was a member of the Pearisburg First United Methodist Church. Besides his parents, he is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Thursday, October 24, at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, with the Rev. Freddrick Long and the Rev. Judith Long officiating. Interment will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. PORTER, Guy David, 82, of Christiansburg, died Monday, October 21, 1996, in Montgomery Regional Hospital. Born November 11, 1913 in West Virginia, he was a retired supervisor for the Semet & Solvy Mining Company, as well as a member of Main Street Baptist Church, Christiansburg. Surviving are his wife, Viola Porter; one daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and William Jarvis; one grandson; one great-grandson; one stepdaughter and husband, Cheryl and Robert Ebert; one stepson and wife, Joe and Jean French; one sister, Anna Lee Pierce; six stepgrandsons; five stepgranddaughters; five stepgreat-granddaughters; three stepgreat-grandsons; one great-great-granddaughter. RICHARDSON, Ralph T., (``Cotton""), 69, of Roanoke, died Monday, October 21, 1996. He was a member of Lakeland Lodge #190 A.F.&A.M., Scottish Rite and Shrine. Mr. Richardson was a retired mechanic for Valley Metro. Surviving are his wife, Beulah C. ROGERS, Mabel Estelle Barrow, 85, of 1001 Mountain Rd., Martinsville, died Tuesday, October 22, 1996 at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville-Henry County. She was born August 23, 1911 in Stokes County, N.C., daughter of the late Henry Coone and Edna Bondurant Coone. She was a retired cafeteria worker for Martinsville City Schools. Mrs. Rogers was a charter member of Chatham Heights Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her first husband, George Dewey Barrow, and her second husband, Ernest A. Rogers; a son, Alvis E. Barrow Sr.; a sister, Christine Roberts; and a brother, Rev. Willie Coone. She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Juanita Barrow of Bassett, Glenwood and Sharon Barrow of Cuthbert, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Blanche M. Barrow of Collinsville; four grandchildren, Kenneth W. Barrow II of Durham, N.C., A. E. (Gene) Barrow of Bassett, Rodney R. WRIGHT, Kenneth Wallace, Sr., 69, of 1145 Stuple Lane, Covington, died Tuesday, October 22, 1996, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. He was born on June 11, 1927, in Roanoke, a son of the late Claude A. and Bessie M. Wright. Mr. Wright served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Curtis A. Smith Post #1033, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also was a member of First Christian Church. He is survived by six sons, Kenneth Albert Wright of Troutville, Daniel Wright of Roanoke, Wallace Wright of Salem, Michael Wright of Edinburg, Timothy Wright of Covington and Kenneth Wright II of Roanoke; four daughters, Gail Bland of Roanoke, Judy Peters of Vinton, Kathie Wright of Roanoke and Kristie Wright of Roanoke; 28 grandchildren, and one sister, Mary Jo Grant of Atlanta, Ga. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel in Covington
