SHAWSVILLE SLIPS PAST RADFORD

Radford's Charlee Taylor put on a layup clinic.

Shawsville did it with free throws.

In the end, the free throws won out as the Shawnees edged Radford 48-47 on Tuesday night in a Three Rivers District matchup in Shawsville.

The Bobcats took the lead in the fourth quarter, but Shawsville's Beth Burdette forged a 45-45 tie on a 3-pointer with a minute left. Taylor countered with a layup to put Radford up 47-45.

The Shawnees then made both ends of a one-and-one, and Sarah Hagood scored the winning point by making the second shot of a two-shot foul with 6.7 seconds left.

Megan Forester led the Shawnees (13-4 overall, 5-2 district) with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Hagood had 17 points and 13 boards, and Burdette contributed 10 points and nine assists.

Taylor led all scorers with 30 points, and Amanda Day added 10 for Radford (9-9, 2-5).

In other games Tuesday night:

Rural Retreat 63, John Battle 44: Mary Brewer led the defense with 15 blocks and just missed a triple-double as the Indians dominated the Trojans in a Hogoheegee District game in Rural Retreat.

Brewer, a 6-foot-3 junior center, added 10 rebounds and nine points for the Indians (12-5, 6-3). Kristie Osborne scored 12 points and Krystal Dale had 10.

Dana Brewer led John Battle (4-10, 3-6) with 17 points and Shannon Gieger had 13.

Tazewell 56, Carroll County 44: The Bulldogs got off to a fast start and defeated the Cavaliers in a Southwest District game in Tazewell.

Suzanne Groseclose scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter as Tazewell (11-7, 3-3) raced to a 13-4 lead. The Bulldogs got 14 points from Rebeka Pruett.

Carroll County (3-16, 0-6) got 16 points from Chelsea Stoneman and 12 from Angie Farmer.

Bath County 69, Craig County 25: You can't let Katie Hardbarger get near the basket in the paint. When you do, she does what she did to the Rockets in Hot Springs, scoring 26 points to lead the Chargers to a Pioneer District victory.

Hardbarger, a 6-1 center, scored 14 of her points in the second quarter. Bath County (8-9, 3-4) outscored Craig County 26-7 in that period to pull away for good.

The Rockets (2-15, 2-6) were led by Rebekah Peters' eight points.

Lord Botetourt 65, Rockbridge County 26: The Cavaliers got scoring from 10 players as they cruised past the Wildcats in a Blue Ridge District matchup in Daleville.

Sarah Hicks had 17 points and seven rebounds and Sara Moore had 13 points and six rebounds to lead Lord Botetourt.

April Staton led Rockbridge County (0-17, 0-11) with seven points.

The Cavaliers are 17-1 overall, 10-1 in the district.

Rocky Gap 47, Grayson County 45, OT: Tessa Andrews had six points in overtime as the Eagles rallied for a Mountain Empire District victory over the Blue Devils in Independence.

Rocky Gap was up 47-42 when Grayson County's Mandy Smith hit a 3-pointer with three seconds to go.

The Blue Devils led 33-27 after three quarters, but didn't have a field goal in the fourth period. Grayson County (5-13, 4-5) had the last shot in regulation, but missed.

Andrews led Rocky Gap (7-11, 2-6) with 18 points.

Lindsey Carico paced the Blue Devils with 24.

William Byrd 45, Christiansburg 32: Stephanie Parnell and Brandy Allen each scored 14 points as the Terriers downed the Demons in a Blue Ridge District game in Christiansburg.

The score was 18-18 at halftime, but William Byrd outscored Christiansburg 13-4 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Narrows 73, Pocahontas 43: The Green Wave scored the first 21 points and rolled to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Indians in Narrows.

Suzanne Webb led the way for Narrows (15-3, 10-0) with 19 points. Tara Collins scored 14 and Natalie Wheeler added 12.

Pamela Nunley and Krista Jennings had 11 points each for Pocahontas.

Laurel Park 63, Bassett 52: Four players scored in double digits as the Lancers downed the Bengals in a Piedmont District game in Martinsville.

Laurel Park led 15-5 after one quarter, but Bassett pulled to 35-26 at halftime. Laurel Park led 53-46 with 2:47 to go and made nine of 16 free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Brandy Martin had 16 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for Laurel Park. Tiffany Lynch scored 15 points and Toy Giles 14. Shermike Harris grabbed 11 rebounds.

Heather Miller scored 28 points for Bassett.

Galax 93, Bland 45: Karen Hall scored 20 points and Erin Kyle added 16 as the Maroon Tide rolled past the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game in Galax.

Hall, who doesn't usually start, also had seven steals, six rebounds and three assists. Galax amassed 41 rebounds - 20 offensive and 21 defensive. Mindy McGrady and Tiffany Williams each added 12 points for Galax (12-5, 7-1).

Jennifer Winters led Bland (0-17, 0-7) with 12 points.

Salem 56, Alleghany 41: Lindsay Carroll scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Spartans to a Blue Ridge District victory over the Mountaineers in Low Moor.

Carroll went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line as Salem (9-8, 4-7) hit14 of 17 in the fourth quarter. Sarah Palmer added 14 points for the Spartans.

Natasha Chapman led the Mountaineers (10-7, 5-6) with 19 points.

Parry McCluer 47, James River 38: Lindsey Coleman scored 14 of her game-high 31 points in the third quarter as the Fighting Blues held on for the Pioneer District victory over the Knights in Buchanan.

James River (5-11, 3-4) cut its deficit to three points late in the game, but the Fighting Blues (11-6, 6-1) maintained control when they were sent to the free-throw line often.

Amy Sprinkle led the Knights with 16 points.

Staunton River 58, Heritage 43: The Golden Eagles scored in double figures in all four quarters as they rolled to a Seminole District victory in Lynchburg.

The Pioneers scored 21 points in the first three quarters and 22 in the fourth.

Penny Forrest and Crystal English each scored 14 to lead Staunton River (9-8, 7-3). Erin Wolfe added 12.

Kim Moss had 21 and Michelle Anderson 15 to lead Heritage (3-13, 2-7).

Glenvar 62, Auburn 21: Amanda Kennedy and Erika Hale scored 15 points each to lead the way for the Highlanders (13-4, 6-1) as they downed the Eagles (7-11, 2-5) in a Three Rivers District matchup in Riner.

Kennedy scored eight points in the lopsided third quarter. The Highlanders hit four of five 3-point attempts in the quarter as they outscored the Eagles 20-2. The Highlanders created 18 of the Eagles' 25 turnovers with steals in the game.

Shooting was the difference, with the Highlanders hitting 24 of 53 shots from the field and the Eagles only seven of 41.

Floyd County 75, Giles 34: Sara Conner scored a game-high 17 points as the Buffaloes coasted to a Three Rivers District victory over the Spartans in Pearisburg.

Jill Quesenberry hit four 3-pointers in the first half and scored 15 points in the game for Floyd County (16-2, 6-1). The Buffaloes outscored Giles 24-3 in the second quarter.

Dawn St. Clair was the lone double-digit scorer for the Spartans (5-12, 0-7) with 13 points.

Magna Vista 50, Fieldale-Collinsville 47: Free throws down the stretch were the deciding factor in the Warriors' Piedmont District victory over the Cavaliers in Ridgeway.

The Cavaliers (6-12, 0-7) led by a point with about a minute left in the game, but the Warriors (7-9, 2-5) were able to win the game with free throws. Moranda Wade, Hope Fulcher and Lakisha Jones were a combined 7-for-11 from the line in the fourth quarter. The Warriors were led by Sandi Reid, who scored 13 points.

Jennifer Witt and Carrie Quinlan led the Cavaliers with 15 points each.

Liberty 46, Appomattox 39: Teona Callaham scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds at the Minettes downed the Raiders in a Seminole District game in Bedford.

Appomattox led 25-23 at halftime, but Liberty rallied in the second half. Catherine Saunders scored 10 points for the Minettes (4-15, 3-7).

Twanna Scott scored 22 points for Appomattox (8-9, 2-7).

Covington 61, Highland 32 Charlie Laws scored a game-high 13 points as the Cougars cruised to a Pioneer District victory over the Rams in Monterey.

Melissa Page added 11 points for Covington. The Cougars (11-4, 7-4) built a large lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Rams 22-8.

Highland remains winless in the Pioneer District, at 2-9, 0-5.
