Illness delays return of child molester
HOPEWELL - A Hopewell man awaiting extradition to Virginia for sentencing on child sexual abuse charges has been hospitalized in Miami.
George Slocum was in Columbia Cedars Medical Center on Tuesday after coming down with yellow fever early last week.
The FBI arrested Slocum earlier this month as he stepped off a plane at Miami International Airport.
Slocum, 52, was charged with unlawful travel to avoid prosecution after he failed to appear for sentencing in 1993 for aggravated sexual battery of a juvenile under 13 and forcible sodomy.

Owner of 26 pit bulls charged with cruelty
NORFOLK - The owner of 26 pit bulls that were confiscated after one of them attacked and killed another one was charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals and failing to provide proper care for the dogs, police said.
Lt. Philip McKeon of the Norfolk animal control unit said Monday a neighbor reported that one of the animals broke free from its chains and attacked the other dog, which was taken to a veterinarian and died.
Officers obtained a search warrant for the house. The owner of the dogs was identified as Travis Baker.
According to police, several of the dogs were maimed, had bite marks on their heads, were suffering from discharges in the eyes and lacked food and water.
