SWOPE WINS KAZIM CLUB PRO TOURNEY

Wes Swope of Salem and Mike Moyers of Stanardsville tied for first place in the Kazim Temple Mid-Atlantic PGA Club Pro Championship golf tournament Wednesday at Hanging Rock Golf Club.

Swope, representing Drive Away, and Moyers each shot 69 to beat Jack Snyder of Greensboro, N.C., by two strokes. Swope and Moyers each won $605.50, with third place paying $408.

Mark Fry, Ronnie Kelley, Chip Sullivan, Jay Hardwick and Jeff Sprinkle were another two shots back after shooting 73s.

Moyers also took first place in the team competition, pocketing another $176.25.

Kevin Black of Roanoke aced the 172-yard 15th hole, using an 8-iron, to win a trip to Jamaica.

CROSS COUNTRY Bryson wins MED title

Jamar Bryson won the Mountain Empire District boys' championship for the third straight year as he led Galax to its eighth consecutive team title.

Bryson completed the 3.1-mile Galax course in 17 minutes, 6 seconds, outdistancing teammate Mac Garner by 34 seconds. Galax finished with 15 points.

Freshman Lauren Lastinger won the girls' competition to lead Galax to its second title in three years. Lastinger posted a time of 21:58, beating defending champion Laura Jo Gray of Fort Chiswell by 42 seconds. Galax finished with 25 points and Grayson County was second with 30.

Both Galax teams and the Grayson County girls' team, in addition to the top 10 runners from each competition, will advance to the Region C meet on Oct. 31 at John Battle High School in Bristol. (Complete results in Scoreboard.)

* Blacksburg captured the Blue Ridge District boys' championship in its first season in the league, outdistancing Lord Botetourt by 18 points.

Rockbridge's Jason Hannah took home individual honors by completing the 3.0-mile Virginia Tech course in 15:49.

Christiansburg's girls squad also took home the Blue Ridge team title in its first attempt with two runners finishing at the head of the pack.

Laura Evans won the individual title with a time of 19:27. Blue Demon teammate Laura Dangerfield placed second. (Complete results in Scoreboard.)

* Cave Spring runners finished 1-2-3 in the boys race as the Knights won the Roanoke Valley District Championship at Hidden Valley Junior High School.

Ben Dowdy finished the 3.1-mile course in 17:29. Laurence Loesel finished second at 18:21 and Brad Ross was third at 18:40 as Cave Spring finished with 20 points. Patrick Henry was second at 50, Franklin County finished third (64) and William Fleming was fourth (96). The top three teams advanced to the Northwest Region meet to be held in Charlottesville.

Katie Hooker won the girls race to lead Cave Spring to a second-place team finish. Hooker ran the course in 23:11, edging teammate Jennifer O'Meara by two seconds. Franklin County's Denise Ingram finished third as the Eagles finished tied with the Knights but won the title on a tiebreaker.

Both Franklin County and Cave Spring will advance to regional competition. (Complete results in Scoreboard.)

* Josh Saunders and Lauren Black led the way as Tazewell won the Southwest District championship in Hillsville.

Saunders covered the 3-mile course in 17:10 to outrun Mark Burnette and Avery Nester of Carroll County.

Black, who finished in 21:21, beat Tazewell teammates Latasha Harris and Emily Lambert to the finish line. Melissa Ogle of Carroll County was sixth.

The Region IV meet is Oct.30 at Radford University.

* John Nervo of Glenvar and Johanna Newman of Floyd County were the individual champions at the Three Rivers District meet at Radford University.

Nervo was timed in 15:23 on the 3.1-mile course, outrunning John Lucas of Floyd County and Brett Willett of Glenvar.

Neuman finished in 21:19 to beat Michelle Quesenberry of Floyd County and Angela Atkins of Glenvar.

Floyd County and Glenvar tied for the boys' championship with 48 points each with the Buffaloes taking the team title based on the tiebreaker system.

Floyd County's girls also won, finishing ahead of Glenvar, Giles, Radford and Shawsville.

* Brent Young of Covington and Wendy King of Bath County were the individual champions at the Pioneer District meet in Hot Springs.

Young covered the 3.1-mile course in 17:29 to outrun Damion Beverly of Parry McCluer and Ray Martinez of Highland County.

King was timed in 23:18 in finishing ahead of Jessica Gillette of Covington and Laura Smith of Bath County.

Parry McCluer won the boys' team championship, followed by Bath County, Highland County, Covington and Craig County.

Bath County won the girls' team title, followed by Covington and Craig County.

The Region C championships will be Oct. 31 at John Battle High School in Bristol.

* Patrick County's Matthew Kirkpatrick finished the 3-mile course at Laurel Park in 16:02 to win the Piedmont District boys' title and lead his team to the championship.

Kirkpatrick beat Magna Vista's Emmanuel Mullins, who finished in 16:39. (Results in Scoreboard.)

Patrick County scored 36 points to better Bassett by three. Magna Vista was a distant third with 75, followed by Martinsville (85) and Fieldale-Collinsville (99).

Laurel Park's Tekesha Terry won the girls' title in 19:58, easily beating Magna Vista's Janie Slaydon (21:35). Magna Vista won the team title by default as it was the only team entered.

All the teams and the top 15 individuals advance to the Region IV meet at Radford University next Wednesday.

ETC. Roanoke men extend soccer streak

The Roanoke men's soccer team extended its win streak to seven game and took solid hold of first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with a 1-0 victory over Emory & Henry in Salem.

Kevin Goodwin picked up his first-ever goal for the Maroons off a cross from senior forward Todd Hallauer at 8:30 in the first half.

Roanoke (8-3-2) outshot Emory & Henry 18-4. The Wasps fell to 4-2-1.

* Meredith Arnott scored two goals and Allison Dlugof and Laura Pecorale each added one as the Maroons downed Greensboro 4-0 in a women's soccer game in Greensboro. Roanoke is 10-6, Greensboro is 6-8.

* Sam Chase finished with two goals and an assist, and Jamie Parker added two goals as the Washington and Lee men's soccer team routed Bridgewater 6-0 in an ODAC game in Lexington. W&L is 9-3, 4-2. Bridgewater is 2-12, 1-8.

* The University of Virginia athletic ticket office has approximately 330 reserved seat tickets available for the Virginia-Clemson football game Nov.9 at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. The tickets, which were returned by Clemson, are $24 each and may be purchased by calling the UVa ticket office at (800) 542-8821 or (804) 924-8821. The tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

* Rick Cormany, the boys' basketball coach for Radford High School, will finish out the season as the Bobcats' girls' basketball coach and Wayne Pridgen will resume coaching the junior varsity team at the school.

Cormany takes over for Brenda King, who is on a medical leave of absence. Pridgen had directed the team last week.

* Osbourn's Jamie Larson defeated Flavio Nogueira of William Fleming 6-3, 6-2 to claim the Group AAA Northwest Region girls' tennis crown Tuesday in Lynchburg.

It was Nogueira's first loss in 13 singles matches, but she qualified to play in the Group AAA tennis tournament starting Nov.8 at Fairfax. Larson, who will also play in the state tournament, is 16-0.

* Christopher Newport's men's and women's basketball teams are picked to sweep title honors in the preseason Dixie Conference basketball polls released Wednesday.

Ferrum's men's team was picked fourth with one first-place vote and the Panthers' women's squad was picked fifth. Complete poll in Scoreboard).
