      divinity degree from the Divine Science Federation on Oct. 13 at the

PEOPLE

The Rev. Tommy London has been installed as pastor of First Baptist Church at Cloverdale. The native of Shelby, N.C., entered the ministry from First Baptist Church of Salem. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University, which he attended on a football scholarship, and of Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg. He is married to Sharon Houston London, formerly of Greensboro, N.C., and is the father of Michelle and Justin London.

Jan Moore has been named minister of music at Ridgewood Baptist Church and will begin her part-time work there on Nov. 10. Currently music director at Green Ridge Baptist Church, Moore has been there for nine years. She is a graduate of Hollins College and has taken additional study at Westminster Choir College. She also has directed music at Rosalind Hills Baptist and Westhampton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Pat Grant, a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in downtown Roanoke, has been named president of District III of the Virginia Region of Disciples congregations. She will serve for two years. The regional assembly promotes the broadcast of church services in some communities as well as Christmas parade floats and events for fellowship and human outreach.

The Rev. Maurita Jaspan Wiggins, founder and pastor of Valley Community Church, has been awarded an honorary degree from the Divine Science Federation. A former president of the federation, Wiggins has been minister of the Roanoke County Divine Science congregation since 1973. She was educated at Hollins College, the University of Virginia and Brooks Divinity School in Denver, Colo.

The Rev. Melvin Maxey of Salem will lead the services at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Fincastle on Nov. 17 and 24 and Dec. 15, 22, 24 and 29. The church is seeking an interim rector following the decision of the Rev. Jim Workman to go to Grace Episcopal Church in Radford.

OUTREACH

Cap Hatien, Haiti, will be the destination of two teams sponsored by United Methodist congregations in the Roanoke District who will bring medical and surgical clinics to the impoverished Caribbean island in May 1997. Volunteers with medical skills are needed for the trips, which will take place from May 16 to May 24 and from May 23 to May 31. For more information about the Volunteers in Mission program, call 366-9065.

Roanoke Valley CROP Walk attracted an estimated 400 hikers with $16,700 pledged, according to Debbie Dennison of the staff of Roanoke Area Ministries, one of the sponsors. One-fourth of this money remains in the valley to buy food for public pantries and day shelters. The remainder is distributed by an international agency, Church World Service.

Christ Episcopal Church has become the first in the Roanoke area to commit to Interfaith Hospitality Network, a program active in 41 communities in which churches offer overnight lodging to homeless people and provide them with dinner and breakfast. When the program goes into effect in the summer of 1997, several other congregations are expected to be part of it.

MUSICAL EVENTS

English and American composers will be featured on Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. when the choir of Christ Episcopal Church, 1101 Franklin Road S.W., provides the music for a Choral Evensong service. Works by Charles Villiers Stanford, Henry Purcell, Gerre Hancock and Frederick Candlyn will be sung along with two Psalms in Anglican chant. Thomas Baugh directs the choir. An offering will be taken.

The Coburns, a Southern gospel group from the Hampton Roads area, will perform Sunday at 11 a.m. at Grandview Heights Church of the Nazarene, Riverdale and Highland roads Southeast.

REVIVAL SERVICES

The Rev. Ken Butterworth, associate pastor of Rainbow Forest Baptist Church at Blue Ridge, will preach for revival services at Red Hill Baptist Church on U.S. 220 in the Clearbrook community south of Roanoke. Sunday services will begin at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., with a Monday night service starting at 7.

Windsor Hills Baptist Church, 4436 Grandin Road Extension S.W., plans revival services tonight through Sunday. The Rev. Lloyd Sprinkle, pastor of Park View Baptist Church in Harrisonburg and publisher of books on Baptist, Puritan and Reformed theology, will be guest preacher. Weeknight worship will begin at 7, with the Sunday services at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

SPECIAL EVENTS

The Rev. Jay Owens, who resigned in July as pastor of Lynn Haven Baptist Church in Vinton, has begun a new congregation, New Century Community Church. More than 80 charter members now are worshiping at the Northside High School Auditorium Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Materials from the church state that it will emphasize conservative theology, informal worship, evangelism, fellowship and drama to present a simple Bible message.

Virginia Heights Baptist Church, 2014 Memorial Ave. S.W., will sponsor a showing of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association film, "Power Play," Sunday at 5 p.m. in the church fellowship hall, with child care provided.

Church Women United, an ecumenical and multiracial organization for human service, will observe its annual World Community Day on Nov. 1 starting at 10 a.m. An offering of $5 for blankets for the needy throughout the world will be taken. The women will meet at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 712 Front Ave. in Salem.

Bible Study Fellowship, an evangelical Christian program established throughout the world, has begun its programs for the season, with Monday night sessions starting at 6:55 at North Roanoke Baptist Church, 6402 Peters Creek Road, Hollins, and Wednesday morning sessions at 9:10 at Grandin Court Baptist Church, 2660 Brambleton Ave. S.W. The evening class includes a program for children 6 through 12, with preschool children given care at the morning class. A memorial service for those who have died during the past year is scheduled Nov. 10 at 7:15 p.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. The service of Evening Prayer will include the lighting of candles to be carried in procession by relatives and friends of the recently deceased. Call 344-9814 for more information.

Life in Haiti will be the theme of the Rev. Castin Mesadieu, pastor of the Roanoke Valley's Haitian Mission, when he speaks Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Ridgewood Baptist Church, 703 Hemlock Road N.W. Mesadieu, a Haitian, recently returned from a mission trip to the island. He has served the Roanoke Valley Protestant congregation for two years.
