Cave Spring teams sell poinsettias

The Cave Spring High School football teams are taking orders for locally grown poinsettias. Colors available are red, white, pink and red-and-white striped. The cost is $10 for a 6 1/2-inch pot or $18 for a 71/2-inch pot. The deadline for ordering is Wednesday. Poinsettias will be delivered on Dec. 7. Staunton River alumni to gather Friday

The Staunton River High School Alumni Association will hold its second annual Alumni Reception Friday at the new Staunton River High School cafeteria. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Local residents pass Virginia Bar exam

The Virginia Board of Bar Examiners recently announced the names of Roanoke Valley residents who passed the July 1996 Virginia Bar Examination. Of the 1,081 people taking the exam, 818 passed.

Roanoke residents passing the exam are Kristopher Edward Ahrend, Hawthorne Dill Battle III, Alexander David Cobey, Patrick Thomas Fennell, David Wesley Garland, Harold David Gibson, Richard Franklin Hawkins III, Andrew Robinson Hough, Luke David Jennings, Scott Andrew Johnson, Kristen Konrad Johnstone, Michael Christopher Lonchar, Greer Gibson Olsen, Victor Samuel Skaff, Edward Bizzell Walker and George Anthony Yancey.

Also passing are William Wesley Nance of Vinton, Heather Ann Poulin of Salem, Karl William Uotinen of Fincastle and Tara Alexandra Branscom of Buchanan.

Registration opens for basketball event

Youth Basketball of America Inc. is registering boys' and girls' teams to compete in its invitational, regional, state and national tournaments.

An informational session on the tournaments will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Airport. Teams must register in advance of the meeting.

Organization, team and player fees will be discussed.

Businesses welcome trick-or-treaters

Children may trick-or-treat at businesses in downtown Vinton on Oct. 31 from 2-5:30 p.m. Businesses participating will display a pumpkin poster on their doors. Children should be accompanied by an adult. For more information, call 983-0613.

The businesses on the corner of Rutherford and Williamson roads in Roanoke also invite children to trick-or-treat from noon to 5 p.m. on Oct. 31. Businesses participating include AAA, Roanoke Valley Credit Union, Avis Construction, Adams Construction, Roanoke Gas Co.

YMCA offers defense seminar for women

The YMCA is offering a seminar on self-defense for women featuring speakers from the Roanoke and Virginia State Police departments Nov. 19. The session will be from 6-9 p.m. at the YMCA Central Branch. The fee is $10. Attendance at the seminar is limited to 20 people. For more information or to reserve a place, call 345-9622.

United Way Care-a-van collects in the valley

The United Way is collecting clothes, toiletries and food for the needy in its Care-a-van program. Donated items will be distributed through various United Way partner agencies.

The Care-a-van will be stationed now through Nov. 3 at Spartan Square on Main Street in Salem. From Nov. 4 through 17, the truck will operate from the Hardee's restaurant at the intersection of Orange Avenue and Gus Nicks Boulevard. The trailer will be staffed Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.

Wrestling program holds signups

Cave Spring Youth Wrestling signups for boys and girls ages 7 to 12 will be held Nov. 11-15 in the Cave Spring High School wrestling room from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Fees are $35, with a maximum of $60 per family. For more information, call Jim King, 989-6318.

Friskies labels help Salem Animal Shelter

Students at Andrew Lewis Middle, East Salem Elementary, South Salem Elementary, G.W. Carver Elementary and West Salem Elementary schools are collecting Friskies product labels to benefit the Salem Animal Control Division. For every label collected, the Friskies PetCare Co. will donate 5 cents to the Salem shelter.

The company will also donate educational videos and computer materials to schools based on the number of labels collected. The program ends on Dec. 20.

Vinton market holds Punkin' Day

Punkin' Day at the Vinton Farmers' Market will be on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fall produce, crafts, plants and baked goods will be sold. From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Trail of Tears Intertribal Dance Group will perform American Indian dances. Activities for children include apple decorating and face painting. Chrysanthemum show Saturday and Sunday

The Skyline Chapter of the National Chrysanthemum Society will hold its 19th annual Chrysanthemum Show Saturday from 1 to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the Williams Memorial Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 2105 Carroll Ave. N.W. Awards will be presented Saturday evening.
