Radford University's men's basketball team has been picked second and its women's team first in the Big South Conference preseason polls of league coaches and sports information directors released Thursday. (Television schedule in Scoreboard. B3)
Anthony Walker, Radford's senior guard, was picked for the preseason all-conference men's team along with preseason MVP Peter Aluma of Liberty.
Radford's Kim Hairston (Bassett) was chosen for the preseason women's team. Honorable mention selections included Kim Cruise of Radford, Leigh Ann Pursifull of Winthrop by way of Floyd County High School, Michelle Wyms of Liberty and Radford High, and Samantha Ferguson of UNC Greensboro and Martinsville High.
The rest of the men's preseason poll included defending champion UNCG in third, Charleston Southern in fourth, Winthrop in fifth, UNC Asheville in sixth, Coastal Carolina in seventh, and Maryland-Baltimore County in eighth.
The women's poll was rounded out by second-place UNCG, third-place Winthrop, fourth-place UMBC, fifth-place UNC Asheville, sixth-place Coastal Carolina, seventh-place Liberty, and eighth-place Charleston Southern.

* The Virginia State Rugby Championships will be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct.26 and 27, at Green Hill Park in Roanoke County.
The 22nd annual Ed and Sandy Lee Cup will be contested by men's and women's collegiate and men's club teams from around the state. There are 26 teams entered in this year's tournament, including collegiate teams from Virginia Tech, VMI and Radford and club teams from Roanoke and Blacksburg. (Complete field in Scoreboard. B3)
Admission is free for the event, which will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
* Jenni Grant scored a goal and added two assists as Washington and Lee shut out the Panthers 4-0 in Ferrum in a non-conference women's soccer matchup. Erica Reineke, Karin Treese and Michelle Bauman also tallied for the Generals (10-4), who outshot Ferrum (5-5-3) 15-1.
* W&L's women's doubles team of Berry Blankenship and Ericka Shapard fell in the quarterfinal round of the Rolex Division III women's tennis championships. They fell to Carnegie Mellon's Keri Mills and Christina Sun 6-4, 6-4.
* Elizabeth Michinard scored twice and Laura Morrow and Sara Noble each added goals as Radford (8-6) blanked Davidson 4-0 in a field hockey game in Davidson, N.C.
* Roanoke Catholic's Maeve O'Meara defended her title at the Blue Ridge Conference cross country championship, completing the 2.9-mile Green Hill Park course in 20 minutes, 44 seconds. (Complete results in Scoreboard. B3)
Roanoke Valley Christian won the team title with 28 points and advances, along with Roanoke Catholic, to the state meet Nov.1 at Woodberry Forest.
