NEW RIVER VALLEY PEOPLE

The Alumni Association of Bluefield College played host to its alumni banquet and annual meeting during Homecoming '96 on the Bluefield campus Oct. 5. Three New River Valley residents were elected officers for the coming year: Wayne Booth ('60), of Christiansburg, president; Margaret Leonard ('55), of Blacksburg, first vice president; and Tina Cunningham ('70), of Christiansburg, second vice president.

Three Roanoke residents, Janice Bishop ('94), Norma Gibbons ('50), and John Hamric('85) were also named as new members of the Association Board of Governors.

Jennifer Newcomb, daughter of Bo Newcomb of Christiansburg, was crowned homecoming queen during the celebrations on campus. Newcomb is an elementary education major at Bluefield.

Ralph Mitchell of Check was among 12 winners in Southern States Cooperative's first calendar photograph contest. Entitled "Rural Magic: Pictures of Country Living," the contest drew more than 3,300 entries from across the farmer cooperative's territory.

Mitchell and the other winners will have their photos in a 1998 Southern States wall calendar. Each winner will also receive a $50 gift certificate and a dinner at a favorite local establishment with the nearest Southern States store manager.

Mitchell took the photo at the top of Bent Mountain in Roanoke County.

Brian C. Lambert, son of Dr. and Mrs. Herman Lambert of Pulaski, is one of eight new associates of Petree Stockton, one of North Carolina's oldest and largest law firms. Lambert practices in the areas of employment and litigation in Charlotte.

Scarlett N. Williams, daughter of Doris and Eddie Williams of Dublin, is a Peace Corps volunteer in Chad, Africa. Williams will work as an urban environmental manager, promoting an understanding of the relationship between water, sanitation and health to people in Chad. The 1991 graduate of Pulaski County High School left for Africa in September. She received a degree in classics and philosophy from St. Johns College in Santa Fe, N.M., in 1995.

Four girls from Cadette Girl Scout Troop 629 recently received the Silver Award, the highest award for this age level and the second highest in Girl Scouting. Ashley Chance and Daniela Canaval conducted a daylong event for Junior Girl Scouts for their Silver Award project. Katie Peters conducted an ecology workshop for summer-school students at Kipps Elementary and Alicia Ranck made a detailed travel guide for younger girls. The girls are sophomores at Blacksburg High School.
