The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and other local law enforcement agencies will conduct random traffic checks this weekend.
Their goal is to target drunken drivers or those violating speed, seat belt or child safety seat laws.
The coordinated effort, called "Drive Smart Virginia," is intended to promote traffic safety and public education, according to county Sheriff Doug Marrs.
Law enforcement officers will be distributing information and giveaway items designed to promote highway safety to drivers at the traffic stops.
Marrs said the results of two similar sweeps conducted earlier this year convinced him of the value of conducting this method of selective traffic enforcement.
