COUNTY GETS NEW BUSING SUPERVISOR

FORMER ROANOKE COUNTY supervisor's chairman Richard Flora returns from Buena Vista.

Buena Vista City Manager Richard Flora has resigned to become supervisor of transportation for Roanoke County schools, succeeding Robert Woolwine, who has retired.

Flora, a Roanoke County native and former chairman of the county Board of Supervisors, has been city manager in Buena Vista for two years.

He will assume the school transportation post Dec. 2.

Flora, 55, is a former city manager in Covington and Clifton Forge. He has also been Craig County administrator and town manager in Big Stone Gap and Woodstock, director of development and engineering in Danville and assistant to the Salem city manager.

"I've been wanting to come back to Roanoke County. It is home," he said Friday. "To get the opportunity to work for Roanoke County schools, nothing could be better."

Superintendent Deanna Gordon recommended Flora for the transportation job and the School Board concurred.

"He has a lot of background in government administration," said Thomas Leggette, board chairman. "He has an advantage in that he is outside the transportation system, and we hope he can come up with some new ideas."

School officials were not available Friday to provide details on Flora's starting salary.

The school system has a fleet of more than 140 buses that transport more than 13,000 students daily.

Flora served as the Hollins District representative on the Board of Supervisors from 1971 to 1975. He lost a bid to become the county's commissioner of revenue in 1979.

He is a graduate of William Byrd High School and Roanoke College.
