TICKETS FOR HEARNS FIGHT ON SALE TODAY

Tickets will go on sale today at 10 a.m. for the Nov. 29 pro boxing card featuring former world champion Thomas Hearns at the Roanoke Civic Center.

Steelhawk Promotions of Roanoke, which is promoting the bouts in conjunction with Global Sports Network of Santa Monica, Calif., delivered a signed rental contract and deposit for the seven-bout card to the civic center on Friday, civic center manager Bob Chapman said.

Tickets are priced from $15 to $150 in five price ranges, and are available at the civic center box office (981-1201) or all TicketMaster locations.

In other sports news in the region:

* The Virginia Tech men's soccer team picked up its fifth straight conference victory by defeating St.Joseph's 3-1 in Blacksburg.

Shane Snyder scored the lone goal for the Hawks in the first half. Mark Ludwig, Matt Whalen and Blair Patteson scored for the Hokies (10-6 overall, 6-3 Atlantic 10) in the second half.

* John Childress of Roanoke Valley Christian set a course record in winning the individual title and host North Cross came away with the team championship at the Virginia Independent Conference boys' cross country meet.

Childress covered the five-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 36 seconds, bettering his own mark set at North Cross during the regular season.

North Cross had four runners in the top 15 to edge archrival Roanoke Catholic 61 points to 63. Childress and RVC finished third, with 73 points.

* Freshman forward Radu Ciocan netted the winning goal in overtime as Appalchian State defeated VMI 3-2 in a Southern Conference soccer match in Boone, N.C.

Appalachian State (5-11, 3-2) improved its overall record against VMI to 28-0.

The Keydets (5-11, 0-5) scored 13 minutes into the second half on a goal by sophomore forward Michael Maire to knot the score 1-1. The Mountaineers regained the lead, but VMI forward Mike Polhamus rifled a shot past Appalchian State keeper Brandon James to send the game into overtime.
