EXPRESS GETS SPANKED 9-1

ROANOKE CONTINUES to struggle in the early stages of the ECHL season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Roanoke Express lost for the third time in its first four games Friday and continued to surrender goals at an alarming rate in a 9-1 loss to the Charlotte Checkers at Independence Arena in an East Coast Hockey League game.

Roanoke (1-3) has allowed 26 goals in its first four games. The first five goals came against Express starter Dave Gagnon, who was pulled after two periods in favor of rookie Larry Moberg. Charlotte scored four third-period goals against Moberg to complete the rout.

The Checkers led 3-0 after only 17 minutes, 43 seconds before Roanoke's Matt O'Dette scored his first goal as a professional at 19:29.

Charlotte added two more goals in the second period before the four-goal third. Matt Robbins and Darcy Mitani scored twice for the Checkers.

The Express plays tonight in Charleston, S.C., against the South Carolina Stingrays.
