BYRD, ENGLISH DISPEL DEMONS

William Byrd's football team gave Christiansburg an English lesson Friday night.

School was out for the Blue Demons after mercury-footed senior quarterback Frank English churned out 193 yards total offense and scored two touchdowns as the Terriers won their third consecutive game, 14-7.

English, who also played linebacker, and the rest of his defensive associates watched the visiting Blue Demons stage a determined fourth-quarter rally to no avail.

Christiansburg quarterback Lance Reynolds, a sophomore making his first start, had quite a debut, completing 15 of 25 passes for 183 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown to fellow 10th-grader John Hindle. The 4-yard scoring toss and Matt Wright's subsequent conversion kick cut a two-touchdown lead for William Byrd (5-3 overall, 3-2 Blue Ridge) to the final margin.

The Demons (3-5, 1-5) started a last-ditch drive at their 34-yard line. Two completions later, Reynolds and Hindle connected again. Hindle split two defenders and raced into the end zone untouched from 44 yards. The Demons' score was nullified, however, because of an offside call.

``My mind kept flashing back to the Northside and Lord Botetourt games, when we had a lead and lost it in the fourth quarter,'' English said. ``I think the Lord was looking down on us tonight.''

Shortly thereafter, Christiansburg's players were trudging off the field looking down at their shoes after Reynolds' final pass was picked off by Jamie Fuqua in the closing minutes.

``We made some critical mistakes in the secondary that we don't usually make,'' said Jeff Highfill, William Byrd's coach. ``It got frantic there at the end of the game.''
