ACCIDENT INJURIES LEAD TO TEEN'S DEATH

A Rocky Mount teen-ager died early Sunday from injuries sustained in a car accident Saturday night.

Beth Suzanne Dean, 17, was a passenger in a car driven by Richard Hampton Janney, age and address unavailable, traveling south on Virginia 635 south of Virginia 697 in Franklin County when the accident occurred, State Police Trooper D.W. Stone said.

The car rounded a curve about 9:40 p.m., crossed the left lane and went off the road. The car continued through part of a front yard before striking a tree and catching fire, Franklin County Director of Public Safety Claude Webster said.

Dean died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital about 4 a.m. She received third-degree burns over at least 50 percent of her body, Webster said.

Janney suffered a broken back and broken vertebrae in his neck, Webster said. He was listed in very serious condition at Roanoke Memorial Sunday evening, a resource nurse said.

A third unidentified teen passenger was taken to Roanoke Memorial with severe head injuries, Webster said.
