OCTOBER HONOREES NAMED IN COUNTY

The following students were selected as Seniors-of-the-Month by the Montgomery County Public Schools for October.

* Emily Trivette of Auburn High School attended the 1996 Governor's School for the Humanities and was a Girls State representative. She has served as co-editor and editor-in-chief of the school's yearbook. She also is involved with the Forensics team, Debate team, Drama Club and the Student Council Association. Trivette has been class secretary for three years.

Trivette also is a member of the English and All-Around Mountain Academic Competition Conference (MACC) teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society and chairperson of the Peer Support. In addition, she is a member of the varsity tennis team and has lettered four years. Trivette is a member of the Community Education Prevention Services Board, Teens As Teachers Instructor and a small-group leader for the Teen/Adult Dialogue Night. She is the daughter of David and Nancy Trivette of Riner.

* National Merit Semifinalist Christopher Steger of Blacksburg High School also is a nominee for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award and a recipient of the Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Club Academic Achievement Award. Steger is president of the National Honor Society and vice president of the International Club.

He also is active with the school and community bands. He is a four-year member of the Roanoke Youth Symphony and the high school Symphonic Band, of which he is captain. He also is a five-year member of the All District Symphonic Band. He attended the Virginia Governor's School for Visual and Performing Arts.

Steger also is a four-year soccer player. He has received both an athletic letter for soccer and an academic letter. He is the son of Charles and Janet Steger of Blacksburg.

* James ``Jay'' Clark Jr. of Christiansburg High School is president of Youth America Campus Club, an organization he has been a member of for four years. He also is active with the Swing Choir (as a sound technician), Teens Need Teens and Student Council Association. He was class president as a sophomore and junior. Clark is a member of the varsity tennis team and a student trainer; he was Trainer of the Year as a sophomore.

Clark has been active with the youth Alcohol Drug Abuse Prevention Project for three years, serving as youth leader and currently as a senior staff member. Clark is an active member of the Main Street Baptist Church, where he sings with the youth choir and is president of the youth council. He is the son of James and Elaine Clark Sr. of Christiansburg.

* Jacqueline Cerva is captain of the MACC Math Team at Shawsville High School. She is a recipient of several awards and honors, including Who's Who Among High School Students, Christiansburg-Blacksburg Rotary Academic Achievement Award, National Mathematics Award and the National English Award. She has been recognized for perfect attendance and for receiving straight As. Cerva is a member of the marching, concert and jazz bands.

As a senior, she is co-captain of the junior varsity basketball team. She also runs track and cross country. She is the daughter of Thomas and Lesley Cerva of Elliston.

Kirk Smith recently won a first-place award in the Creative Writing Contest sponsored by the Virginia Highlands Festival. Smith's poem won first place in the 6-8 age group category. He received the award at the Fifth Annual Celebration of Children's Literature.

Smith wrote the poem when he was in third-grade. He now is a fourth-grader at Gilbert Linkous Elementary School. He worked on the poem with Jane Goette, a gifted- and fine-arts coordinator for Montgomery County Public Schools. A special study of poetry was taught by Goette for several students in Pat McAlister's third-grade class during the 1995-96 school year. Smith was a member of the group.

First-graders at Falling Branch Elementary School recently visited the Misty Mountain Pumpkin Farm in Newport. The children have been studying a unit about fall and pumpkins. During their visit to the farm, the children were treated to a hayride, learned how pumpkins grow and had a

picnic. The class also toured the barns and saw farm animals.

The Christiansburg High School Marching Blue Demon Band has completed its competition season. The band performed at several competitions this fall including the following:

* Sept. 28, Bedford County Invitational at Staunton River High School. The band earned a superior rating.

* Oct. 12, attended George Wythe Band Festival in Wytheville. The band earned an excellent rating.

* Oct. 19, attended the James Madison University Parade of Champions competition. The Blue Demon Band was one of 58 bands from five states.

Two Radford High School students, who are sisters, have been accepted into the 1997 American Choral Directors Association National Children's Choir. Stephanie and Jennifer Rooker were selected through taped auditions. They are among 100 others chosen to perform with the choir in San Diego in March 1997. They both study with Lois and David Castonguay. Jennifer is an 11th-grader and Stephanie is in the ninth grade. They are the daughters of Greg and Fran Rooker of Radford.

Two other Radford students were selected for the 1996 Virginia Honors Choir. Whit Ellerman and Evan Gregory will perform with Honors Choir Nov. 23 at The Homestead in Hot Springs at the 1996 Virginia Music Educators Conference.

Ellerman is the son of Gary and Kay Ellerman.

Gregory is the son of Russell and Dana Gregory.

MEETINGS, EVENTS & HAPPENINGS

Riner Elementary School will have its annual Halloween Carnival from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Prizes will be awarded to those who participate in a variety of contests and games. The Haunted House will be a special feature of the carnival. Food will be available.

The Radford Band Boosters are selling Indian River citrus fruit to benefit the Radford High School Bobcat band. A door-to-door canvass will be done Saturday and Sunday. Fruit may also be ordered by calling 731-0099 or 639-3042. Orders will be accepted until Nov. 22. The fruit will be available for pick-up at the Radford Armory Dec. 13-14.

The Pulaski County Band Boosters will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in the band room.
