WHO'S TALKING TO CARILION EMPLOYEES

SERVICE EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION

Health care workers account for about 43 percent of its 1.1 million members in the United States and Canada. They are the second-largest group, behind 585,000 public employees, who make up 53 percent.

KENTUCKY NURSES ASSOCIATION

It is affiliated with the American Nurses Association, which is not a union, but which allows its state units to offer collaborative bargaining as a member service.

The Virginia Nurses Association doesn't offer bargaining, but the Kentucky nurses group represents about 900 nurses in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. It represents only registered nurses.

UNITED MINE WORKERS

It has 180,000 members, about 90 percent working in mines and a very small percentage working in health care. The union several years ago identified the health care industry as a potential future source of members and has had some organizing successes. The union represents some hospital and nursing home workers in Dickenson County. Employees of Maple Grove nursing home in Lebanon this month filed the necessary papers to vote on whether to affiliate with the mine workers.
