FORT CHISWELL STUNS NARROWS

Amy Coleman scored 10 of her 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter as Fort Chiswell handed Narrows its first Mountain Empire District defeat of the season, beating the Green Wave 52-47 on Monday night in Fort Chiswell.

Narrows held a 34-32 advantage heading into the fourth quarter, but could not finish the Pioneers.

Kelly Reynolds hit all four of her free-throw attempts in the final period for Fort Chiswell (11-8 overall, 8-3 district). The Pioneers led 50-47 with the clock winding down. Narrows (15-4, 10-1) had a 3-point attempt with two seconds left in the game, but missed and was forced to foul. Reynolds hit two free throws to make it 52-47.

Amber Gunter added four rebounds, five steals and three assists to her eight points for Fort Chiswell.

The Green Wave was led by Suzanne Webb's 16 points.

In other games Monday:

Shawsville 51, Auburn 48: Sarah Hagood scored six of her game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Shawnees (13-5, 5-3) won a Three Rivers District nail-biter over the Eagles (8-12, 3-6) in Riner.

Mandy Forester came off the bench to score all seven of her points in the first half to help Shawsville take a 25-20 halftime lead. Megan Forester scored 16 points.

The Shawnees led by five with six seconds remaining when the Eagles' Sarah Black hit a shot and was fouled. She missed the free throw and Auburn fouled when the Shawnees controlled the rebound. Shawsville missed the front end of a one-and-one and the Eagles rebounded and missed a shot from half-court for a tie at the buzzer.

Auburn was led by Susan Wirt, who scored 14 points, and Black and Laura Underwood, who scored 11 points each.

James River 56, Staunton River 51: The Knights (7-12) surprised the Golden Eagles (10-9) with a third-quarter spurt to win a non-district game in Buchanan.

Amy Sprinkle scored nine of her 19 points in the third quarter to propel James River. The Knights outscored Staunton River 16-7 in the third when the Golden Eagles' Penny Forrest got into foul trouble. Forrest fouled out early in the fourth quarter after scoring 12 points.

James River sewed it up by making eight of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Julie Firebaugh added 17 points for the Knights. Staunton River's Stephanie Alexander led all scorers with 20 points.

Northwood 73, George Wythe 46: The Panthers (17-4, 10-2) clinched the Hogoheegee District regular-season championship by avenging one of their district losses with a victory over the Maroons in Saltville.

Jill Woodward scored 35 points, Sarina Jones had 20 and Crystal Kestner added 14 for Northwood, which blew a 15-point lead in Wytheville in a loss this month.

Megan Johnson scored 20 for George Wythe (8-11, 6-5).

Chilhowie 55, Rural Retreat 53: Kristy Poe scored 21 points, Amanda Mountain added 16 and Melanie Hicks pulled down 16 rebounds as the Warriors took over second place in the Hogoheegee District.

Chilhowie is 11-7, 8-3.

Kristie Osborne led Rural Retreat (13-6, 7-4) with 15 points.

Galax 61, Grayson County 47: The Maroon Tide (14-6, 9-2) took control in the first quarter and used full-court defensive pressure to maintain its advantage throughout in a Mountain Empire District victory over the Blue Devils (6-14, 4-7) in Independence.

Tiffany Williams led the way for Galax with 23 points and Erin Kyle added 16. Lindsay Carico contributed 15 points and 15 rebounds and Dana Whittington scored 11 points for Grayson County.

Alleghany 64, Christiansburg 37: Katie Craft scored 19 points and Natasha Chapman added 18 as the Mountaineers rolled to a Blue Ridge District victory over the Blue Demons in Christiansburg.

Stewart Milton and Lisa Dalton scored eight points each for Christiansburg (9-10, 4-9). Alleghany is 12-7, 7-6.

Carroll County 38, Graham 34: Amanda Beemer scored five of her seven points in the fourth quarter as the Cavaliers won a Southwest District game in Bluefield.

Beemer was one of four Carroll County players with seven points.

Graham was hampered by a lack of preparation for the game. The hosts' head coach spent the past seven days in the hospital, the junior varsity coach quit and the team had not practiced in several days.

Rocky Gap 55, Bland 29: Tessa Andrews scored 12 of her game-high 17 points in the first half as the Eagles bolted to a 17-point lead and rolled to a Mountain Empire District victory in a battle of Bland County rivals.

Jamie Johnston scored 14 for Rocky Gap (9-11, 5-6)

Bland is 0-20, 0-12.
