Scott S. Cole recently was promoted to the rank of first lieutenant in the Air Force. Cole is an electro-mechanical teams section chief at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, Calif. Cole graduated from Blacksburg High School in 1990 and from Virginia Military Institute in 1994. He is the son of Stephen R. Cole of Blacksburg and Claire C. Vaught of Rural Retreat. His wife, Jennifer, is the daughter of Lucius and Brynda Merritt of Blacksburg.

Marine Pfc. Michael S. Cromer recently graduated from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer course at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C. Cromer is a 1995 graduate of Auburn High School. He joined the Marine Corps in December 1995. He is the son of Barbara Cromer of Riner and Gary Cromer of Christiansburg.

Marine Pvt. Kenneth H. Snare is a recipient of a Meritorious Mast. Snare was cited for outstanding service while assigned with 1st Stinger Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 18, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan. He was recognized for superior individual performance.
Snare graduated from Floyd County High School in 1995 and joined the Marine Corps in June 1995. He is the son of Derrell and Laura Snare of Willis.

Two area women recently joined the Army under the delayed enlistment program at the U.S. Army Recruiting Station in Christiansburg. They have the opportunity to delay enlistment into the Army for up to one year before reporting to basic military training.
*Tammy J. Jones graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1981. She will report to Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. for basic training in January 1997. She is the daughter of Margaret A. Prim of Hiwassee.
*Aliza A. Stinson graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1990. She also will report to Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., for basic training in January 1997. She is the daughter of Helen M. Wardrick of Blacksburg.

Marine Pfc. Robert B. Jackson recently reported for duty with Marine Wing Support Squadron 273, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, S.C. Jackson graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1995 and joined the Marine Corps in August 1995. He is the son of James Jackson and Jenny Shephard, both of Pulaski.

Army Pvt. Gregory A. Turpin recently graduated from basic military training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. Turpin is a 1996 graduate of Christiansburg High School. He is the son of Ray and Debbie Turpin of Christiansburg.
