* The Radford City Council on Monday established an ad hoc Telecommunications Committee to make recommendations on granting and renewing cable TV licenses. American Cable Entertainment has requested a 15-year extension of its license, due to expire in 1998. The committee will consist of the assistant city manager, the directors of finance and electric utilities, a representative of Radford University and a private citizen. Councilman Bill Yerrick will serve as an ex-officio member of the committee. He is director of telecommunications and distance learning for Radford University.
Council also approved a $51,879 upgrade of the city's main computer system, which is 13 years old and running at greater than 100 percent capacity. This has been accomplished by removing data and restoring it as needed, a time-consuming and risky procedure. The new computer, an AS400 Advanced 36, will use existing software but will be faster and more compatible with new equipment.
Council set a public hearing date for the special use permit request by the First Pentecostal Holiness Church to construct a new 5,900-square-foot sanctuary and expand parking facilities at their Second Street property. The hearing will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Radford Municipal Building, 619 Second St.
