The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Service has announced a recall of 11,700 small plastic Halloween candy buckets.
Direct Source International of Blue Ash, Ohio, voluntarily recalled the items after Dillon Stores of Hutchinson, Kan., and the CPSC found prohibited levels of lead in the black, red and yellow paint, which peels easily. The paint can cause lead poisoning in young children who may eat it.
The buckets come in three styles: orange pumpkins, white skulls and green Frankenstein heads. They measure 2.75 inches in diameter by 2.25 inches in height. They come in cellophaned packs of six with an orange cardboard label that reads, "HAPPY HALLOWEEN ... 6 Halloween Buckets." The back reads "43748 88014 ... Direct Source International Inc. ... Made in China." Some packages also include "Item NO. FF-014" on the back of the label.
The buckets were sold at retail stores, including Dillon and Kroger Co., from August to October, for about $1 per package.
CPSC received one report of a child who might have ingested some of the paint.
Consumers should take the buckets from children immediately and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Consumers with questions about the recall can call Direct Source International at (513) 793-9379.
