Monday mornings are bad enough, but the latest one was worse than usual for Mary Shewey, Buena Vista's voting registrar.
"My phone has sort of been going off my desk," she said. People wanted to know if it was true that an advisory referendum on whether Rockbridge County needs a small airport was really going to be on the ballot in Buena Vista.
Lexington Registrar Lucille Joyce was bombarded with calls, too. And it didn't take either of them very long to figure out who to blame: The Roanoke Times.
A story in Monday's paper incorrectly reported that voters in Lexington and Buena Vista would vote on the referendum along with county residents.
"It's not true, honest," Shewey said. "Oh golly, I hope you'll make a nice correction so maybe this phone will quit ringing."
The airport has been a hotly contested issue in the county, even in quarters where it won't be on the ballot. Shewey thinks that may account for why she got so many calls.
"I felt like maybe they were kind of pleased they were going to get to vote on this thing," Shewey said.
For the record, again, they're not.
