Southwest Virginia's fifth - and, at least for the time being, final - Wal-Mart Supercenter holds its grand opening today in Salem. The 179,000-square-foot store on West Main Street also is the chain's 10th Virginia Supercenter.
Half the Virginia stores have opened in this part of the state within the past 10 months: Christiansburg, Rocky Mount, Roanoke, Martinsville and, now, Salem. While two more are scheduled to open next year in Richmond and Mechanicsville, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman said, no more Supercenters are planned for Southwest Virginia.
The Salem store, an expansion of an existing Wal-Mart, will include a full-service grocery with bakery, deli and meat departments; a vision center; video store; hair salon; bank; McDonald's; and portrait studio. It will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and has added 200 employees to the original staff of 200.
