The oil companies that transformed Montvale's landscape years ago with their giant gasoline storage tanks will present the Montvale Volunteer Fire Co. with $22,500 today to buy a new fire truck equipped to fight petroleum and chemical fires.
Previously, Montvale firefighters have had to call hazardous material squads from Roanoke and Salem for help in fighting such fires.
The donation is the second in a program to increase ties between the community and the oil companies - Amerada Hess, Amoco Petroleum Products, Citgo Petroleum Products, Chevron USA Products Co., Colonial Pipeline Co., Star Enterprise/Texaco and Williams Energy Ventures.
Last year, the group donated $16,500 for an addition to the fire station. Individual oil companies also have donated money to Montvale Elementary School over the last two years.
