CREIGHTON, John Joseph, 79, of Buena Vista, died Wednesday, October 30, 1996, at his home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 3, 1917, he was a son of the late Jack and Agnes Tolan Creighton. He was a retired store manager with A&P Food Stores. Mr. Creighton was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the American Legion. He also was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Corps. He is survived by his wife, Elinor Rubinetti Creighton of Buena Vista; two daughters, Ellie Burns of Buena Vista and Ann Barbera of Queens, N.Y.; five grandchildren, and a brother, James Creighton of Asheville, N.C. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 2, 1996, at the Lomax Funeral Home Chapel, with Father Alan Lipscomb officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. FORD, Roger Dene, of Clinton, Md., a native of Roanoke, died on October 26, 1996 at Washington Hospital Center. He was the Executive Director for the D.C. Center for Independent Living, Inc. He was preceded in death by his mother, Madelene Basham Ford. He is survived by his father, Rogers W. Ford, Roanoke; two brothers, Cavanugh Ford, Kearney, N.J., Thurston C. (Rama) Ford, Roanoke; two sisters, Malinda F. Roseborough, Greensboro, N.C., and his twin, Myrtlene Ford, Roanoke. He also leaves three uncles; three aunts; great uncle and great aunts; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; friends; and two very close special friends, Michael Benoit and Barbara Sherrod. FORREST, Wilmont Daniel, (``Bill""), 74, of 305 Wolf Street in Narrows, died Tuesday, October 29, 1996 at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, Va. Born in Elmira, N.Y., he was a son of the late Charles and Myrtle St rope Forrest. Bill distinguished himself by serving his country in the U.S. Navy in both WW II and the Korean War and was the father of the late Craig Charles Forrest. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Ann Peck Forrest; his daughter, Sandra Lynn Forrest of Oakland, Calif.; his grandson, Scott Daniel Forrest of Moneta; his sisters, Mrs. Leroy (Naomi) Burnham of Horseheads, N.Y. and Mrs. Richard (Jean) Coon of Horsehead, N.Y.; and his stepmother, Frances Forrest of Horseheads, N.Y. GILBERT, R . Herschel, 82, of Buena Vista, died Tuesday, October 29, 1996, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born in Buena Vista on July 26, 1914, he was a son of the late Willis E. and Bessie Inge Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert retired from Burlington Industries in 1980 and was a member of the Stone Church of the Brethren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Weldon W. Gilbert. He is survived by his wife, Gladys Thompson Mays Gilbert of Buena Vista; two daughters, Judy Cash of Buena Vista and Janet Pryor of Roanoke; four stepchildren, Robert L. Mays of Fairfield, Ann Weikel and Sue Lynn of Buena Vista and Brenda Johnson of Bridgewater; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth G. Humphreys of Williamsburg, Mary G. GRIGGS, Vivian, 84, of Peterstown, W.Va., died Tuesday, October 28, 1996, in a Pearisburg, Va., hospital. Born on September 12, 1912, in Narrows, Va., she was a daughter of the late William Elbert and Lora Janie Ganoe Ferguson. Mrs. Griggs was a homemaker, and a member of Peterstown Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Myrtle Havens, Beulah Epperly and Minnie Ferguson, and five brothers, Clarence, Charlie, Oscar (``Sandy""), Bill and Arnold Ferguson. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Lee (``Red"") Griggs; three daughters, Mrs. Faye Jones and her husband Giles, and Ms. Jeanne Allen of Peterstown, and Mrs. Judy Lewis and her husband Norris of Christiansburg, Va.; two sons, Carvel Griggs and his wife Ellen, and Robert Griggs and his wife Gaye of Peterstown; three sisters, Mary Nichols of Washington, D.C., and Martha Hobbs and Lora Mullins of Narrows; one brother, Harry L. Ferguson of Rich Creek, Va.; 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, November 1, 1996, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home Chapel in Peterstown, with the Rev. Jonathan Jennings and the Rev. Charles Jack officiating. HAGER, George Williams, 65, of Salem, died Tuesday, October 29, 1996. He served in the United States Air Force and retired from Norfolk & Western Railway with 37 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife , Naomi Poe Hager. LINKOUS, Phoebe Katherine Wall, of Blacksburg, died Tuesday, October 29, 1996, in a Salem nursing hom e after a long illness. She was born July 29, 1908, to the late Ida Williams Wall and Waddy Thompson Wall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow N. Linkous; her sister, Eleanor V. Wall, and her brother, Robert A. Wall. As a life-long resident of Blacksburg, she had several teaching positions here and was the librarian of Blacksburg High School for 30 years before her retirement in 1975. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia L. Vaughan, and her son-in-law, John D. Vaughan, of Fort Collins, Colo., and by her nephew, Robert T. Wall of Blacksburg. Mr. Mitc hell was a mechanic for Renfra Corporation and a member of Glen Lyn Baptist Church. ROWLAND, Thelma Williams, 89, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 1996, at her home on Westview Street in Narrows. She was born on March 23, 1907, in Maybrook and was the daughter of the late Aquilla Reese Williams and Lou Ann Atkins Williams Camper. She was preceded in death by a son, Alfred R. Rowland of Lancaster, Calif. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of the Rose Garden Club and was honored with a lifetime membership. Mrs. Rowland was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy for 43 years, serving in various offices. The McComas Chapter of the UDC awarded her the Winnie Davis Medal, the highest honor that a member can receive. The chapter gave her special recognition for her many years of love and devotion to UDC work by dedicating their 100th anniversary history book to her. She has been honored as a real daughter and was pictured in the national UDC magazine on the occasion of her and her husband's 60th wedding anniversary. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Berkley W. Rowland of the home. She also is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and George E. Barker of Abingdon; a son and daughter-in-law, Bryant W. and Shirley Rowland of Narrows; a daughter-in-law, Emalean Rowland of Lancaster, Calif.; a half brother, Warren Camper of Richmond; a faithful companion, Anna Sue Martin of Narrows; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and many special friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows, with the Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Concluding services will be held in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. The family will gather with their friends at Riffe's in Narrows from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

He was born in Ivanhoe the son of the late Edd Early and Ina Robinson Tomlinson and was a retired Staff Sargeant of the U.S. Army and a veteran of the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.
