Zoning hearing Nov. 19 in Vinton

Nov. 19 has been set as the date for a public hearing on a request for zoning waivers by a landowner in Vinton Industrial Park.

Daniel L. Hudson plans to construct rental storage buildings at 900 S. Third St. in the industrial park, but has asked for several variances from the town zoning code.

In a petition filed with Vinton Town Council, Hudson requested waivers that would allow him to construct the buildings of wood and place them within 3 feet of the side and rear property lines and not put asphalt around the buildings.

Vinton Town Manager Clay Goodman said rental storage buildings are allowed in the industrial park, but he felt a hearing was necessary because of the variances requested by Hudson.

Police seek funds to upgrade computer

Vinton Town Council has approved a request by the town police to seek state funds to help cover the cost of upgrading its computer reporting system.

R. R. Foutz, chief of police, asked that Town Council agree to appropriate $5,000 if the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services will approve a grant for $15,000.

Foutz said he wanted to purchase additional modules to expand the department's present computer so it could have electronic video imaging and expand record-keeping to include parking, gun and concealed weapon permits, pawn tickets, arrest warrants and subpoenas, equipment maintenance and personnel records.
