The Rev. David S. Elks will leave the staff of Vinton Baptist Church on Nov. 20. Elks, who has been minister of education and senior adults for the past five years, will become senior pastor of Elizabethtown Baptist Church near Wilmington, N.C. His family includes his wife, Sandra, and daughter, Kayla.
Melanie Willetts has become minister of music at Penn Forest Church of God. A former resident of Salem, Willetts founded and directed the Capital Area Mass Choir of Washington and is a singer and music teacher.
The Rev. S.R. "Randy" Rule, pastor of St. Andrew's Catholic Church, has been honored in the Diocese of Richmond for his support of Catholic education. Rule received an award last Friday in Richmond from the diocesan agency that promotes the state's several Catholic schools.
Robert F. Bondurant, a lay leader for many years in St. John's Episcopal Church of Roanoke, has been awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria. Bondurant, active in the parish for more than 65 years, has served as senior warden, been a representative to the national General Convention four times, and served on many church and human service boards.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Family Fun Night, an alternative to Halloween celebration, is scheduled tonight at Lakeside Baptist Church, 447 Dalewood Ave. in Salem. The church fellowship time will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and is free.
Gary Temple, superintendent of the Potomac Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in Washington, will be guest preacher Saturday at 11 a.m. for the North Valley Adventist congregation. Worship is held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4909 Peters Creek Road N.W. Lunch will follow the service.
Lutheran Family Services, an agency of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, has received a $250 grant from Lutheran Brotherhood, a fraternal benefit society that matches donations from parishes and individuals. The family services office on Virginia 419 works with families and individuals and maintains an adoption counseling service. Its satellite offices are in several Virginia communities.
Brent Barnhart, a trumpeter with the Grand Ole Opry Gospel Show, will perform Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at East Gate Church of the Nazarene, 2002 East Gate Ave. N.E. The concert is free.
A Women's Weekend with workshops on money management, preventive health and developing a balanced life will be in progress Friday through Sunday at Loudon Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Registration is needed by today; call 342-8852 before 2 p.m. The program also will include a teen-age girls' session for those 13 and older. The program will end with the Sunday morning service at 11 at which Zena Preston, associate minister of Jerusalem Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Martinsville, will preach.
At High Street Baptist Church, 2302 Florida Ave. N.W., the 112th anniversary of founding will be observed Sunday. Guest leaders at the 10:30 a.m. service will be the Rev. Gregory K. Moss and the choir of Zion Baptist Church in Reidsville, N.C. At 4 p.m., the choir will present special music.
"Beyond Shadowlands," a play by Anne Timmons based on the poetry and prose of British theologian C.S. Lewis and his wife, Joy Davidman, will be presented Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in DuPont Chapel of Hollins College. Call 362-1000 for more information.

At Deliverance Church, 2002 Mercer Ave. N.W., worship on Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. will include preaching by the Rev. Thomas O'Dell, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church. Music will be by the joint Deliverance Choir and the Bradford Choir of the Episcopal Church. The two congregations have a parish partnership for worship and outreach.
A pageant, "The 20 Candles of Life," will be presented Sunday at 5 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W. It will include narration by Danice Hunt and special music by the Rev. J. Eugene Young, pastor.
