Sandlot Super Bowl begins Saturday

Championship games in the 1996 Sandlot Football Super Bowl will be held Saturday and Sunday at Salem Stadium.

Approximately 75 football teams and cheerleading squads, involving more than 3,000 young people, have competed in the October playoffs. Teams from Roanoke, Salem, Glenvar, Botetourt County and Roanoke County will compete in the Super Bowl.

Tickets, which are good for all games, are $2. Proceeds from the event will benefit Roanoke Valley youth recreation programs. For more information about the event, call your area recreation department.

YMCA offers defense seminar for women

The YMCA will offer a self-defense seminar for women Nov. 19 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the YMCA Central Branch.

The seminar will feature speakers from the Roanoke city and Virginia state police departments and a defense manual and hands-on training.

The fee is $10.

K of C holds basketball signups

The Knights of Columbus will hold basketball signups for boys ages 9 to 17 to participate in Roanoke City Recreation Leagues Saturday, 11 a.m.-noon, at the Booker T. Washington Gym.

Roanoke residents or those attending Roanoke city schools are eligible.

There is no registration fee, but birth certificates must be presented to sign up.

The group is also in need of adults to coach or assist.

Grandin Road parade seeks participants

The 1996 Grandin Road Children's Mini Christmas Parade will be held Nov. 23. Participants will assemble at Christ Lutheran Church on the corner of Brandon Avenue and Grandin Road between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. rain or shine.

Spectators and participants may donate nonperishable food items which will be collected from curb sides and given to the RAM House.

Byrd students perform holiday play in Dec.

A two-act play adapted from the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" will be performed in December at William Byrd High School. Cast members will include students and children of the faculty from William Byrd High and Middle schools.

Performances are scheduled for Dec. 9-11 and 19-21 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for students and $2 for children. Group rates are available. For more information, call Carol Webster at William Byrd High School, 890-3090.

Jackson Middle School open house Sunday

The Jackson Middle School Parent Teacher Student Association will sponsor an open house at the renovated school at 1004 Montrose Ave. on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Roanoke begins leaf collection program

The city of Roanoke is offering two programs to help residents dispose of unwanted leaves.

Beginning Monday, residents may bag leaves and place them on the curb on their regular trash pickup days. Do not mix trash with leaves.

For those who rake leaves to the curb, vacuum collection will begin Nov. 18 throughout the city.

All leaves collected are recycled into mulch, which is available to residents free of charge.

Bagged leaves will not be collected during the week of Nov. 25-29. The collection program will end Dec. 20. Residents with questions may call 981-2225.

Chili Fest set for Nov. 16

The Cave Spring Lions Club will hold its annual Chili Fest fund-raiser Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lions Clubhouse on Colonial Avenue and Merriman Road. Chili is packed in ready-to-freeze containers. Price is $4.75 per quart. Proceeds will benefit the Lions Club's programs for the visual and hearing impaired and other service projects in the Roanoke Valley. For more information, call 774-2375.

YWCA holds book fair

The YWCA will hold its one-day Great Book Fair on Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the first-floor corner room of the YWCA Central Center on First Street.

The books, including New York Times best sellers, educational and reference books, cookbooks and many others, will be offered at a savings of 40 to 70 percent of the retail price.

Roanoke Valley SPCA raises pickup fees

The Roanoke Valley SPCA recently raised its pick up and boarding fees for animals owned by Botetourt County residents. The new pick up fees are $10 for the first time; $20 the second time; and $30 thereafter. The new boarding fee is $7.75 per day. Citizenship classes offered in November

A citizenship class will be offered by the Refugee & Immigration Services office on Saturday mornings, 10 a.m.-noon, from Nov. 16 to Dec. 7 at the Jefferson Center. Investment seminar for women Saturday

Ginny Allison, investment broker with A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc., will present a workshop on "Playing To Win: Learning The Investment Game" on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the YWCA Central Center, First Street.
