FIGHTING BLUES FORCE TIE WITH WIN

Parry McCluer turned up the defensive pressure in the second half Thursday to forge a tie for the Pioneer District lead with a 68-56 victory over Covington in Buena Vista.

The Fighting Blues (14-6 overall, 9-1 district) avenged an earlier loss to the Cougars (9-1 district) by winning the second half 39-30.

Lindsey Coleman (21), Clarissa Johnson (21) and Nikki Barger (20) provided the offensive firepower for Parry McCluer.

Covington got 21 points from Joanne Helton and 16 from Melissa Page.

In other games:

Blacksburg 64, Rockbridge County 40: Casey Beamer had 19 points to lead the Indians to a Blue Ridge District victory in Blacksburg.

Blacksburg (6-15) led 31-15 at halftime and maintained its lead the rest of the way.

Rockbridge County (1-19) got 11 points from Kate Ides.

William Byrd 61, Alleghany 56: William Byrd's Laura Nester connected on six 3-point attempts and scored 20 points to lead the Terriers to a Blue Ridge District victory in Low Moor.

The Mountaineers built nine-point leads in the second and third periods and threatened to pull away before Nester, who leads Timelands in 3-point accuracy, hit a pair of 3-pointers to end each run.

William Byrd (17-3, 12-2) pulled even in the fourth quarter and put the game away down the stretch with Andrea Gay's 6-of-7 performance from the free-throw line in the final minutes.

Brandy Allen added 17 points in the Terrier victory. Alleghany (12-8, 7-7) was paced by Natasha Chapman's 18 points, Katie Craft's 14 and Nan Showalter's 12.

Bath County 54, Highland 30: Katie Hardbarger scored 19 points as the Chargers used a big third quarter to put away the Rams in a Pioneer District finale in Hot Springs.

Bath County (9-11, 3-5), which will play host to next week's district tournament, led 25-17 at the half before putting the game away with an 18-4 third quarter.

Tammy Shifflett had 11 points and Tara Hiner 10 for Highland (2-9, 0-7).

Salem 52, Northside 38: The Spartans shot 71 percent from the floor in the first half and bolted to a Blue Ridge District victory at Northside.

Salem (11-9, 8-6) made 15 of 21 shots from the field in the first half in building a 35-16 lead at the break. Sara Palmer had 14 of her 18 points in the first half and Mandy Williams added 10 of her 13 as the Spartans pulled away.

Northside (15-5, 10-4) got 11 points from Samantha Webb.

Wednesday's games

Staunton River 58, Appomattox 48: The Golden Eagles held a 35-19 halftime lead and went on to win the Seminole District matchup with the Raiders in Moneta.

Staunton River (11-9, 9-3) was led by Erin Wolfe's 15 points, seven assists and six steals. Crystal English added 12 points and 12 rebounds and teammates Stephanie Alexander and Penny Forrest added 10 points each.

Appomattox was led by Kia Scott with 14 points.

George Wythe 58, John Battle 45: Megan Johnson scored 18 points and Lisa Garland 11 as the Maroons jumped out to an early lead and cruised to the win over the Trojans in a Hogoheegee District game in Wytheville.

George Wythe (9-11, 7-5) was led by Megan Johnson's 18 points and seven rebounds and was 10 of 13 from the free-throw line. Lisa Garland added 11 points for the Maroons.

Dana Booher and Shannon Geiger led John Battle with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Rural Retreat 71, Holston 66: The Indians blew a 17-point halftime lead but held on to beat the Cavaliers in a Hogoheegee District game in Rural Retreat.

Holston outscored Rural Retreat 26-10 in the third quarter to cut the lead to one point.

Kristie Osborne led the Indians (14-6, 8-4) with 13 points while Mary Brewer added 12 and Jane Grubb had eight points and 12 rebounds. Holston was led by Connie Surber with 22 points and Stacy Wright added 18 points. Tighe Martin added 15 points for the Cavaliers.

Tazewell 55, Carroll County 30: Amanda Perry scored 19 points as the Bulldogs routed the Cavaliers in a Southwest District game in Hillsville.

Rebecca Pruett had 10 of her 14 points in the first half as Tazewell (11-9, 4-4) took a 29-14 halftime lead and coasted to victory. Suzanne Groseclose added 12 points for the Bulldogs.

Angie Farmer scored 10 points to lead Carroll County (4-17, 1-7).
