A General Assembly committee studying the future of Virginia's environment will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday in the grand ballroom of the Patrick Henry Hotel in Roanoke.
The hearing is one of a series being held by the joint House-Senate committee, which is developing a long-term vision and plan for the protection and use of the state's natural resources. Members of the committee from this region are Del. Creigh Deeds, D-Warm Springs, and state Sen. Madison Marye, D-Shawsville.
This year's General Assembly formed the committee in response to public concerns about the reorganization of state natural resource management agencies during the past decade.
The committee is particularly looking for comment on the importance of natural resource industries, the needs for preservation and improvement of air and water quality, law enforcement, land use and development, open space and recreational needs, waste management, and state natural resources policy.
Hearings have been held in Marion and Verona. A final hearing will be held Nov. 21 in Norfolk.
For details or to indicate an interest in addressing the hearings, call Chad Hudson at (804)786-7681. Speakers are encouraged to bring written copies of their comments to the hearing and to limit their remarks to three minutes.
