3-POINT GOALS HELP BYRD GET DISTRICT VICTORY

William Byrd's Laura Nester connected on six 3-point goals and scored 20 points to lead the Terriers to a 61-56 Blue Ridge District victory over Alleghany in Low Moor on Thursday.

The Mountaineers built nine-point leads in the second and third periods and threatened to pull away before Nester, who leads Timesland in 3-point accuracy, hit a pair of 3-pointers to end each run.

William Byrd (17-3 overall, 12-2 district) pulled even in the fourth quarter and put the game away down the stretch with Andrea Gay's 6-of-7 performance from the free-throw line in the final minutes.

Brandy Allen added 17 points in the Terriers' victory. Alleghany (12-8, 7-7) was paced by Natasha Chapman's 18 points, Katie Craft's 14 and Nan Showalter's 12.

In other games:

Salem 52, Northside 38: The Spartans shot 71 percent from the floor in the first half and bolted to a Blue Ridge District victory at Northside.

Salem (11-9, 8-6) made 15 of 21 shots from the field in the first half in building a 35-16 lead. Sara Palmer had 14 of her 18 points in the first half and Mandy Williams added 10 of her 13.

Northside (15-5, 10-4) got 11 points from Samantha Webb.

Parry McCluer 68, Covington 56: Parry McCluer turned up the defensive pressure in the second half to forge a tie for the Pioneer District lead with a victory over Covington in Buena Vista.

The Fighting Blues (14-6, 9-1) avenged an earlier loss to the Cougars (9-1 district) by winning the second half 39-30.

Lindsey Coleman (21), Clarissa Johnson (21) and Nikki Barger (20) provided the offensive firepower for Parry McCluer.

Covington got 21 points from Joanne Helton and 16 from Melissa Page.

Blacksburg 64, Rockbridge County 40: Casey Beamer had 19 points to lead the Indians to a Blue Ridge District victory in Blacksburg.

Blacksburg (6-15) led 31-15 at halftime and maintained its lead the rest of the way.

Rockbridge County (1-19) got 11 points from Kate Ides.

Bath County 54, Highland 30: Katie Hardbarger scored 19 points as the Chargers used a big third quarter to put away the Rams in a Pioneer District finale in Hot Springs.

Bath County (9-11, 3-5), which will play host to next week's district tournament, led 25-17 at the half before putting the game away with an 18-4 third quarter.

Tammy Shifflett had 11 points and Tara Hiner 10 for Highland (2-9, 0-7).
