Stedman House to cease retail

Stedman House Inc. will close its South Roanoke retail gift and accessory store, the owners announced Friday. But the interior design firm will continue to run a two-person design studio out of its Crystal Spring Avenue office.

It simply has been too difficult to run the Roanoke store long-distance, said Stedman Oakey Jr., who took over the business in 1990 at the death of his father, who founded Stedman House 54 years ago. Oakey lives in Charlottesville, where he oversees another Stedman House shop and studio.

"My sisters and I decided unless I could do it right, unless I'm there, it's just too hard to do," he said. "It's been a very emotional decision." His sisters live in Texas and Australia.

Many interior design firms, faced with increasing competition from discount stores and mass-market retailers, have opted to close their retail stores, Oakey said. Stedman House will continue to operate stores and studios in Charlottesville and Wintergreen, W.Va., as well as a studio in Richmond and a sales office in Blacksburg.
