AGEE, John Edward, 67, of Route 1, Thaxton, died Thursday, October 31, 1996, in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on November 27, 1928, a son of the late Jacob Alonza Agee Sr. and Lila McKinney Agee. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank A. Agee and Jacob A. Agee Jr., and three sisters, Estelle A. Bowyer, Annie A. Ruff and Shirley A. Goff. He was a retired supervisor with Piedmont Label Corp. John is survived by his wife, Ruth Parker Agee; daughter and son-in-law, Susie A. and Robert Fulton of Bedford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richie E. and Judy Agee, and Marty W. and Kelly Agee of Bedford; one brother, James W. Agee of Bedford; three sisters, Roxy A. Dooley, Ruth A. Phillips and Ruby A. Noel of Bedford, and three grandchildren, Kimberly D. Fulton of Richmond and Christopher E. Fulton and Corey W. Agee of Bedford. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 3, 1996, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Earl Ragland and the Rev. Dr. Michael R. DuVal officiating. BRANT, Bennie Joe, (``Peanut""), 40, of Roanoke, passed away suddenly Thursday, October 31, 1996. Born on March 25,1956, he was a Navy veteran. He was employed by Lanford Brothers Construction as a foreman with 71/2 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Sara Jo St. Clair Brant, and daughter, Amanda St. Clair, both of the home; his mother, Shirley Brooks of Roanoke; his father, Oather Brant, and grandmother, Julie Brant, both of Lewisburg, W.Va.; two sisters and their spouses, Devra and Gary Fisher, and Anissa and Steve Clark, all of Roanoke; two brothers and a spouse, Mike and Sarah Brant, and Timmy Brant, all of Roanoke; his mother-in-law, Heidi St. Clair; brothers and sisters-in-law, Spencer and Terri St. Clair, Mary and Red Cawley, Evelyn and Wayne Sparks, and Sylvia and Ron Schrader; nephews, Willie South and his wife Laura, Joshua and Timmy Fisher, Andy and Jonathan Brant, Tyler Clark, Ricky Davis and Brad St. Clair; nieces, Shannon South, Andrea and Tonya Fisher, Kacey Brant, Nicole Sparks and Angie Cawley, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services will at 11:30 a.m. Monday, November 4, 1996, from Oakey's North Chapel. The Rev. Joe Greene will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. CARTER, Bobby McCoy, 67, of Victoria, died Sunday, October 27, 1996. Mr. Carter was a graduate of the University of Richmond, retired territory sales manager with the tire indust ry and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla M. Carter of Covington; a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Carter and Michael L. McAlister of Roanoke; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby M. and Caroline H. Carter II of Roanoke and Stephen V. and Natalie P. Carter of South Hill; three grandchildren, Travis L. Carter of Roanoke, Joshua R. Carter of South Hill, Mitchael Carter McAlister of Roanoke. A graveside funeral service was held Wednesday, October 30, 1996 12 noon at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice, Va with Rev. Donald L. Collins officiating. COLWELL, Mabel Thornton, 96, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday morning October 31, 1996. She was the widow of Eugene Edward Colwell and a long time member of Cave Spring Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Frances (Pat) and T.D. (Bo) Shelton, Roanoke; special companion, Brenda Lehrer, Roanoke; sister, Etta Thornt on Harris, Forest; sister-in-law, Miss Annie Colwell, Salem; brother-in-law, Gordon T. Bryant; also a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel 11 a.m. Saturday with Dr. George Bowers and Dr. Woodrow Clark officiating. FRANK, Ruth Leslie, of Staunton, died Thursday, October 31, 1996. She was employed as a receptionist for Smith Transfer from 1966 to 1987, and retired from Val-Mar. She was a graduate of Lexington High School and a member of Buffalo Gap Presbyterian Chapel. Her husband, Clyde A. Frank, preceded her in death on July 3, 1990. Surviving are her brother and sister-in-law, Emmett G. (``Buck"") Jr. and Jackie Leslie of Lexington; a nephew, Emmett G. Leslie III; a niece, Debbie Humphrey and her husband Frank T. Humphrey Jr.; a great-nephew, Frank T. Humphrey III; a great-niece, Mary Leslie Humphrey, and a special friend, June Hall of Staunton. HARMAN, Alexander Marrs, Jr., SENIOR JUSTICE, 75, of Blackberry Lane, Hiwassee (Pulaski County), died Thursday, October 31, 1996, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was born in War, W.Va., on February 7, 1921, and was the son of the late Alexander M. and Rose Sinclair Harman. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Smith. Justice Harman received his LL.B. degree in 1944 from Washington & Lee University, and his LL.D. (Honorary) degree in 1974 from Washington & Lee. He was a member of the Phi Delta Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa fraternities. Justice Harman was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1943. He was the Pulaski Town Attorney from 1944 until 1946, Vice-President of the Virginia State Bar from 1949 until 1951, and a partner in the law firm of Gilmer, Harman & Sadler in Pulaski from 1944 until 1964. He was Judge of the 21st Judicial Circuit (Pulaski County) from 1964 until 1969, Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia from October 1, 1969, until December 31, 1979, and he was Senior Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia from January 1, 1980, until 1996. He was active in the Democratic Party in Virginia, where he served as the Chairman of the 9th District. He was Chairman of the Virginia State Board of Elections, a member of the Pulaski Board of Zoning Appeals from 1958 until 1964, and Chairman of the Pulaski Development Authority from 1962 until 1964. He was also President of the New River Valley Industrial Foundation from 1963 until 1982, and a member of the Virginia Commission of Constitutional Revision, 1968 until 1971. He was a member and past Exalted Ruler of Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067. He also served as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Virginia Southwest District. He was an honorary life member of the Pulaski Elks Lodge #1067. He was President of the Virginia State Elks Association and was the eldest living Past State President in the Virginia State Elks Association. The last position he held was as Chairman of the board of Grand Trustees, BPOE. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4, 1996, at 11 a.m., from the Stevens Funeral Chapel, Pulaski. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in the Maplewood Cemetery, Tazewell. Visiting will be Sunday afternoon and evening at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, from 2 until 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. HARPER, Breanna Lanae, infant daughter of Gary A. and Cindy H. Harper of Troutville passed away Thursday, October 31, 1996 in a Salem Hospital. HOBBS, Willie Wellington, 81, of Pearisburg, died Thursday night, October 31, 1996, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salem. Mr. Hobbs was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Hoechst-Celanese Corporation. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Hobbs of Pearisburg; a son, William W. Hobbs of Pearisburg; a brother, Woodrow Hobbs of Charleston, W.Va.; six stepbrothers, Amos Hobbs, Nathan Hobbs and Franklin Hobbs of Pearisburg, Richard Hobbs of Huntington, W.Va., Elbert Hobbs of Salem and Dallas Hobbs of Michigan, and a stepsister, Mrs . Pauline Asbury of Michigan. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 3, 1996, at the Givens Funeral Chapel in Pearisburg, with the Rev. Gray Smith officiating. KUMMER, Karl, 69, of Salem, died Friday, November 1, 1996, in a Salem hospital. He was retired from General Electric Company in Salem. He is in the Roanoke College Athletic Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Brown Kummer. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Karl David and Donna Kummer, and Michael Brown Kummer, all of Salem; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Sue Kummer and William Nicholas Schiffli of Charlotte, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Jim Wilbourne of Salem, and one granddaughter, Alison Brown Schiffli. McCROSKEY, Thomas Edward, Sr., 74, of Pearisburg, died Friday morning, November 1, 1996, at Friendship Manor Nursing Home following a long illness. Mr. McCroskey was born in Giles County on July 27, 1922, and was a son of the late William McKinley McCroskey and Mary Elizabeth Woods McCroskey. He was a member of Pearisburg Baptist Church, a retired employee of Hoechst-Celanese Corporation and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, James and Terri Becker, and Thomas E. McCroskey Jr. of Pearisburg; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Larry Day of Roanoke, and Edye and Ronald White of Dublin; eight brothers, Morrell McCroskey of Pearisburg, Russell McCroskey of Covington, Kenneth M. VAUGHN, Philip Early, 74, of Richmond, formerly of Eagle Rock and Fincastle, Va., died Thursday, October 31, 1996 at his home. He was a son of the late Alonzo Edgar and Hattie B. Vaughn of Eagle Rock, a six year World War II Naval Reservist and Pearl Harbor survivor. He owned and operated a grocery store in Fincastle for 25 years. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Meat and Poultry Services. He was a member of Boulevard United Methodist Church, formerly a member of Fincastle United Methodist Church, where he was active in the choir. He was also a member of Catawba Masonic Lodge #342. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ellalee Dodd ``Noonie"" Vaughn; son, Philip Dale Vaughn, Albany, N.Y.; daughter, Teresa Leigh ``Terry"" Vaughn, Staunton, grandson, Alexander Dunning Vaughn, Albany, N.Y.; seven siblings, Clara V. Rice, Columbus, Ohio, James Vaughn, Eagle Rock, Kitty V. Madison, Pinkerington, Ohio, Elizabeth V. Stanley, Harrisonburg, Charles Vaughn, Penn Laird, Marguerite ``Jackie"" Vaughn, Eagle Rock and ``Petie"" V. Harry, Richmond; 21 nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and nephews.
