SULLIVAN FINISHES 4TH IN TOURNEY

Chip Sullivan, golf pro at Hanging Rock Golf Club, shot a final round 72 to finish tied for fourth Friday in the Zevo PGA Assistant Professional Championship at the PGA Golf Club at The Reserve in Port St.Lucie, Fla.

Sullivan finished with a total score of 286, 2-under-par for the championship. He earned $2,183.33.

Jim Schuman of Janesville, Wis., sank a 25-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole to spark a 4-under-par 68 and cruise to a seven-stroke victory. Schuman, a 33-year-old apprentice professional at Maple Bluff Country Club, had a total score of 12-under-par 276, surpassing the 1991 record of 278 by Kim Thompson of American Fork, Utah.

Schuman took home $5,000.

The championship featured 41 PGA section assistant champions and the defending champion and assistant champions from Australia, Canada and Great Britain.

In other sports news in the region:

* VMI forward Brent Conley, last season's Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, is a unanimous selection to the coaches' preseason all-conference first team.

Conley, a 6-7 sophomore, joined Tennessee-Chattanooga senior forward Johnny Taylor, Appalachian State junior forward Kareem Livingston, Marshall senior guard Keith Veney and Furman junior center Chuck Vincent on the team. The coaches also tabbed Taylor, an NBA prospect often compared to Scottie Pippen, as preseason player of the year (Complete team in Scoreboard. B3).

VMI senior guard and Martinsville High School graduate Maurice Spencer also received votes for the team.

* One-time Roanoke Valley boys' basketball coaches Walt Ayers from Bluefield College and Joe Davis from Lynchburg College will bring their teams to William Byrd High School for a scrimmage at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Ayers coached at Franklin County and Davis was at Glenvar, Salem and Cave Spring.

* Wake Forest has received two men's basketball commitments, one of them from 6-9 Aron McMillian, who also considered Virginia two weeks ago.

McMillian, from Greensboro Day School, is the son of ex-NBA player Jim McMillian. The other commitment was from 6-5 Niki Arinze from King High School in Nashville, Tenn.

* Radford women's soccer team missed an upset bid when Tennessee's Holly Kimble helped the Volunteers to a 2-2 tie with a penalty kick in the game's 91st minute in Radford.

Kelly Riescher and Karen Dellavia scored the Highlanders' goals. Goalkeeper Nicole Reed had eight saves for Radford (5-10-2).

* Roanoke College's fourth-seeded field hockey team fell 9-0 to Eastern Mennonite in semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament in Harrisonburg. Homestanding Eastern Mennonite (19-1), the tournament's defending champion, faces third-seeded Lynchburg in today's final at 1:30.

Lynchburg (13-6) erupted for four goals in the second half to beat Randolph-Macon 4-2. The Hornets avenged a 1-0 regular-season loss to the Yellow Jackets.

Roanoke finished its season 9-5. Ali Ogelsby took all three of the Maroons' shots in the first half. Jen Pohanka made 11 saves in goal before giving way to Amanda Kelly, a senior from Lord Botetourt High School.
