Paul G. Wirt, a retired Army captain and veteran of the Persian Gulf War, will be the Veterans' Day speaker at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the town's Wall of Honor in Withers Park.
Wirt, who graduated in 1981 from George Wythe High School and 1985 from Virginia Tech, postponed his wedding days after Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, and was deployed to Saudi Arabia as acting battalion operations officer. He was wounded four months later in stopping a troop transport from driving over explosives primed to detonate.
Over the next four years, Wirt endured 35 operations to save his shattered leg. He now works in civil service as an engineer project manager at the Directorate of Public Works at Fort Bragg, N.C.
Montgomery Schools sponsors screening
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Public Schools and the New River Valley Early Intervention Council are sponsoring a free health screening for preschoolers from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Center for Women's Health Education at the New River Valley Mall.

Wytheville holds fall brush cleanup
WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville is holding its annual fall cleanup week this week, with townspeople allowed to place brush, yard trimmings, leaves and other vegetation at the curb on their regular trash pickup days.
Residents are limited to one dump-truck load. A brush disposal area next to the old landfill on Atkins Mill Road will also be open this week from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is open regularly on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. for brush.
The Public Works Department is vacuuming leaves raked to the curb. Further information can be obtained by calling the department at 223-3354.
Payment hours stretched by town
WYTHEVILLE - Wytheville citizens unable to visit the town treasurer's office weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to pay their personal property and real estate taxes have another option. Tax payments can be placed in a night deposit box at the front of the Municipal Building.
The office will also be open from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Dec. 14, the last Saturday before the Dec. 16 tax deadline. Anyone who has not received a tax ticket by Nov. 15 should contact the treasurer's office at 223-3333.
Industrial park proposed by NS
WYTHEVILLE - Norfolk Southern Corp. has outlined a rail plan for a proposed industrial park in Wythe County on the 533-acre Ratcliff-Suthers tract near Wytheville.
The information will be incorporated into a final engineering review for the site by the end of this week. It will be presented at the next scheduled Wythe County Joint Industrial Development Authority meeting Dec. 12, and then at the subsequent Board of Supervisors meeting Dec. 17 with a recommendation from the authority on whether to proceed.
