The Art Museum of Western Virginia is presenting an exhibit of paintings by Roanoke artist Antoinette Hale through Jan. 26 in the first floor galleries. The exhibit features paintings that portray aspects of African American life in Roanoke, including the above oil on canvas titled "After Supper," from 1988. Hale, who was raised in a middle-class home in segregated Roanoke, worked as a social worker and with the Veterans Administration throughout the country. She returned to Roanoke in 1979 and retired in 1982. Most recently Hale's work won "Best in Show" at the Sidewalk Art Show.
