TECH MEN WIN A-10 CROWN

Virginia Tech won its first Atlantic 10 Conference men's cross country team championship Saturday at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.

The Hokies placed five runners among the top eight and finished with a total of 28 points. St. Joseph's was second with 58 points.

Matt Byrne of St. Joseph's won the individual title with a time of 25 minutes, 24 seconds.

Van Arnold, who was runner-up to Byrne with a time of 25:51, and Mike Cox, who finished fourth with a time of 25:54, were the Hokies' top finishers. Mike Dowdy (Cave Spring) placed seventh for Virginia Tech.

The Tech women's team placed fifth in the 11-team field, 80 points behind winner Massachussetts (35). Tech's top finisher was Stephanie Ingersoll, who was seventh with a time of 18:55. Rebecca Donaghue of Massachussetts finshed first with a time of 18:04.

In other cross country:

* The Radford men's and women's teams each finished fifth in the Big South Conference championships in Rock Hill, S.C. Coastal Carolina won both team titles.

* The Washington and Lee men's team was first and the women's team second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships in Lynchburg. The Roanoke College men's team finished third and the women's team fourth. Carson Flowers of Washington and Lee finished first in the women's competition with a time of 20:24, and Shelli Stevens of Roanoke finished second. In the men's competition, Jeff Conant of Lynchburg was the winner with a time of 26:36. William Olson of Washington and Lee was the runner-up

BASKETBALL Orange team wins Virginia Tech scrimmage

The Orange team came from behind in the last two minutes on baskets by Ace Custis and freshman Jesus Rodriguez and held on to defeat the White team 61-58 in Virginia Tech's intrasquad scrimmage at Cassell Coliseum. Custis was the game's high scorer and rebounder with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Myron Guillory added 13 points and Alvaro Tor had 11 points. Shawn Browne led the White team with 15 points, and Troy Manns scored 11 points and freshman Russ Wheeler added 10 points.

SOCCER No. 1 UVa men blank Virginia Commonwealth

Top-ranked Virginia received goals from Mike Fisher and Matt Leonard as the Cavaliers defeated VCU 2-0 in Charlottesville. Virginia (15-0-3) outshot the Rams (6-7-3) 11-1.

* Freshman Kevin Terne scored two goals as the Radford men's team shut out Charleston Southern 4-0 in a Big South Conference game at Charleston, S.C. Kevin Kelly and Eric Ruano added goals for the Highlanders (9-9-1, 4-3).

* The Roanoke men's team downed Guilford 3-1 at Alumni Field. Demis Yanco, Keith Cozzens and Walter Robinson scored for the Maroons. Roanoke outhsot Guilford 14-5.

* The Virginia Tech women's team received goals from Denise Williams and Heidi Skinner in its 2-0 Atlantic 10 Conference victory at St. Bonaventure. The Hokies improved to 9-9-1 and 5-3 in the A-10.

* Third-seeded Roanoke College advanced to the championship of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's tournament with a 2-0 victory over second-seeded Washington and Lee in Ashland. The Maroons will take on No.1 seed Randolph-Macon, a 4-0 winnner over Virginia Wesleyan, at 1:30 p.m. today. Meredith Arnott scored two goals for the Maroons.

* The North Roanoke Rowdies defeated the Vinton Rowdies 2-1 in sudden-death in a Roanoke County Youth Soccer Championship game. Kevin Meyers scored with two seconds left in regulation to tie it at 1-1. Josh Goins scored the game-winner 2:15 into sudden-death. North Roanoke finished the season 13-0.

BOWLING Parker rolls 300 game at HillTop

Ernest Parker bowled his first 300 game during league play at HillTop Lanes.

Parker, 26, carries a 170 average. He was bowling in the Saturday Bunch League for The Wild Ones with teammates Paul Price, Amy Sink and Melissa Price.
