CURRY PUTS STING IN HORNETS

Dell Curry and Muggsy Bogues, two original members of the Charlotte Hornets, helped their revamped team and new coach Dave Cowens open the season with a 109-98 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C.

Curry, a former standout at Virginia Tech, set a club record by making 11 consecutive field-goal attempts during the second and third quarters. He matched a franchise record with 20 points in the third when he made all eight of his shots, and finished with 38 points - a new high for his 11-year career.

Bogues, the 5-foot-3 point guard who was limited to six games last year by pain in his left knee, limped through much of the second half but waved off several attempts to take him out. He wound up with eight points and 10 assists.

Cowens, a Hall of Fame center known for his aggressive style, especially on defense, was brought in during the off-season to instill a new sense of toughness to the Hornets.

Cowens, playing an entirely different starting five than the Hornets featured on opening day a year ago, saw his players harass Toronto into 46 percent shooting and roll to a 51-34 rebounding advantage.

Toronto, which never led, got 19 points from last season's Rookie of the Year, Damon Stoudamire.
