CELEBRATIONS - ANNIVERSARIES

Bell anniversary

Ben and Catherine Bell celebrated their 50th anniversary on October 27, 1996. The celebration was held at the Salem Civic Center.

It was hosted by Kathy B. Henderson, their daughter, J.R. (Bob) Henderson, Jr., their son-in-law, and Joan Henderson, their granddaughter.

Ben Bell was a prisoner of war during WWII. He retired from Kennard-Page Plumbing & Heating after more than 40 years of service.

We wish to thank Vickie H. Larrington, Bob's sister, for her help at this special event.

Farmer diamond anniversary

Ray and Nina Farmer celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary, October 6th at Damon's Best Western with a reception given by their children, Angeline Paulette of Bowling Green Kentucky, Jacqueline Marzano of Arlington Texas and Mack Farmer of Radford, Virginia. Ray and the former Nina King were married in Salem, Va., October 6, 1936. They have two grandsons, Luke Okes of Lynchburg and Adam Farmer of Radford. They also have a great grandson Jeremy Okes and a great granddaughter, Mari Okes both of Lynchburg. Instead of gifts it was suggested that guests bring memory sheets describing an experience or occasion with the couple.

Hall anniversary

Evelyn and Roscoe Hall celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary October 13, 1996, at Melrose Christian Church, hosted by their daughter, Betty Jones Rice, Baltimore, Md. Both are long time members of Melrose Christian Church, where they met 47 years ago.

Harris anniversary

Maxwell K. and Christine L. Harris celebrated their 50th anniversary on November 2, 1996. The celebration was held at Grace Baptist Temple Fellowship Hall and was hosted by their three sons and spouses, Robert and Bonnie Harris, Richmond, Ky., Kenney and Cindi Harris, Roanoke, Va., Rick and Jeri Harris, Ashland, Ky. The couple was married November 2, 1946. They have six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They are both retired.

Hartman Anniversary

David and June Hartman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary October 6th, 1996, at a reception hosted by their children. David and June were married on October 5th, 1946 in Roanoke. They have four sons, one daughter, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. David is retired from Eli Lilly and June is a volunteer at the VA Hospital. They are both members of Mountain Pass Baptist Church.

Peery anniversary

The children of Reynold and Laurie Beane Peery honored their parents on August 31 with a Golden Anniversary Buffet celebration held at the Gertrude W. Harris Activities Center in Salem.

The couple was united in marriage on July 14 at the Beane Family home in Cave Spring. The groom's brother, Lewis Peery was best man; the bride's sister Eulah Beane was maid of honor.

All eight children and their spouses were present and participated on the anniversary program. Andr, the oldest, served as Toastmaster.

Highlights of this most joyous occasion included a reflections video of the couple's happy years together, which was prepared and presented by Cedric and Carrie Peery and music rendered by Eulah, Cedric, Gregory, Andr, and grandchildren Rochelle Peery and Charemon Peery-Hicks.

Bernice and Cornelius made special presentations of new wedding bands and an anniversary quilt was made especially for the couple b y daughter, Bernice. The quilt depicted wedding and anniversary dates, and a picture of the wedding.

A letter was read from a life-long friend Katherine Pullens who introduced the couple in 1942. Many tributes and a toast were given and the elated honorees gave expressions of thanks and love to all in attendance. The memorable occasion was shared with family members, a few friends and neighbors and Rev. James P. Beatty.

Pullen anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Alva Pullen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary November 1, 1996. They were married in Roanoke, Va. on November 1, 1946. Mrs. Pullen is the former Myrtle Whitlow and is a homemaker. Mr. Pullen is retired from the Norfolk and Western Railroad. They have one daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Sam Long, and two grandchildren.

Womack anniversary

Jerry and Vivian Womack have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were married on November 1st, 1946. The celebration was held at ``The Homeplace'' and hosted by their children, Phyllis Womack, Shirley Laprade, Barbara Laughter and Paul Womack. They have five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is retired from Norfolk Southern. She is the former Vivian Leonard. Thank you Dad and Mom for being such wonderful parents and grandparents. We love you very much.
