TWO ROANOKE WOMEN DIE IN CAR ACCIDENTS

A Roanoke woman was killed early Saturday in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 220 north of Greensboro, N.C.

Janie Marie Hicks, 49, apparently was on her way to a Duke University football game when the accident occurred.

She was the front-seat passenger in a car that bounced off a guardrail, veered back to the left, crossed the center line, then hit an oncoming pickup truck.

Four other people were injured, one critically, in the accident and taken to area hospitals.

Hicks worked in the deli at the Orange Avenue Kroger store.

Co-workers described her as a pleasant, well-mannered person who was fun to work with.

"She was someone who always brightened the day," said Don Webb, a clerk.

An 82-year-old Franklin County woman was killed Saturday when she pulled out in front of another car, state police said.

Anna Theresa Friel of Callaway died at the scene about 5:30 p.m. The accident occurred on Virginia 619 a half mile east of Virginia 707.
