ROANOKE CONTROLS RENEGADES 5-2

The Roanoke Express reeled off four straight goals as it beat the Richmond Renegades 5-2 in an East Coast Hockey League game Sunday. The Express also shut down seven Richmond power plays.

Brian Secord put Richmond on the board at 3:20 in the first period, but Jeff Cowan retaliated off an assist by Duane Harmer 13 seconds later. The Express took a 2-1 lead at 7:50 when Kyle Millar scored in his first game for Roanoke. (Summary in Scoreboard. B4)

The Express added two more goals in the second period to chase Richmond goalkeeper Grant Sjerven. Chris Lipsett scored on a power play at 5:16 and Jeff Loder added a short-handed goal, his seventh goal of the season, with a blast from the left side of the net at 18:22.

Cowan scored again at 12:16 of the third period to push Roanoke's lead to 5-1, but Mike Taylor added a late goal for Richmond at 15:58 for the final margin.

Dave Gagnon recorded 33 saves on 35 shots for the Express. Roanoke (4-5-1) continues a six-game trip Tuesday with a visit to the Birmingham Bulls in Birmingham, Ala.
