Both Roanoke Catholic and North Cross are in the Virginia Independent School Division I football playoffs, and both will travel this weekend.
Roanoke Catholic (5-5), which had been rated in the top four of the state rankings all year, fell to sixth after losing 22-19 to North Cross and will play at Brunswick Academy, rated No.3. The Celtics beat Brunswick Academy 19-7 earlier in the season and won five out of their first six games before losing the last four.
North Cross (5-3) is rated No. 5 and travels to No. 4 Colonial Beach. The Raiders won three of their last four games, including an upset of Division II Lynchburg Christian, which is ranked No. 2.
In other sports news in the region:
* Pairings are set for the Group AAA Northwest Region volleyball tournament and Cave Spring will play a first-round game against E.C. Glass at 7 p.m. tonight at Patrick Henry.
The Knights (18-2) are forced to play a home game at Patrick Henry because the Cave Spring gym is being used for voting polls today.
Franklin County, the Roanoke Valley District runner-up, travels to Albemarle tonight.
Semifinals are scheduled for Thursday with Albemarle playing host if it wins tonight. If Albemarle loses, Cave Spring will be the host if it wins. The winner Thursday qualifies for the Group AAA tournament and will be in the regional finals at C.D. Hylton on Saturday against the team that survives from the Cardinal and Commonwealth districts.
* Roanoke College will be the No.1 seed when the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament begins today. The Maroons (11-3-2, 8-1) play host to No. 8 Lynchburg (7-12-1, 3-6) at 2:30 p.m.
In other quarterfinals, fifth-seeded Washington and Lee (10-5, 5-4) plays at No. 4 Randolph-Macon (12-4-1, 6-3), No. 7 Eastern Mennonite (10-7, 4-5) plays at No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan (11-5-1, 7-2) and No. 6 Emory & Henry (7-9-1, 4-4-1) plays at No. 3 Hampden-Sydney (9-7-1, 6-3). * The Virginia women's soccer team opens the ACC tournament against North Carolina State at 8 p.m. Thursday in Clemson, S.C.
Virginia finished in a four-way tie for second place with a 3-3-1 record and received the fifth seed based on tie-breakers. In other first-round games Thursday, No.1 North Carolina plays No. 8 Florida State, No. 2 Duke plays No. 7 Wake Forest and No. 3 Clemson plays No. 6 Maryland.
* Radford, which was picked to finish fifth in the preseason Big South Conference men's soccer poll, finished second during the regular season. The Highlanders are seeded behind nationally ranked UNC-Greensboro for the tournament that begins Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
The Highlanders play at 5 p.m. Saturday against the Coastal Carolina-Maryland Baltimore County winner.
* Roanoker Dicky Linkous will be officially inducted into the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame at the organization's annual awards banquet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hidden Valley Country Club.
The 1997 Metro High School team and player of the year awards also will be announced.
Jack Hobson of Philadelphia will be the guest speaker. Hobson owns a business that helps high school golfers land college scholarship money and gain entry in various national tournaments.

* New River Valley Speedway 1996 track champion Chad Harris was honored over the weekend at the Winston Racing Series Champions banquet at Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn.
The Stuarts Draft native received $2,100 from the Winston national points fund for his eighth-place finish in the Blue Ridge Region.

* The Roanoke Rush defeated the Savannah Chiefs 18-6 in a National Minor League Football second-round playoff game Saturday night in Savannah, Ga.
Tailback Jamie Warren scored all three Rush touchdowns and ran for 75 yards. With the victory, Roanoke (11-1) advances to play the Hammond Thunder (9-3) for the Southern Conference Championship at 1 p.m. Saturday at Victory Stadium.
The winner goes to the NMLF Championship game in High Point, N.C., on Nov.23.
